I can't get over the idea of turning bonus actions into some sort of semi-reaction that also occurs before, or simultaneously, with the trigger.

Bonus action are already the odd man out in a relatively great action economy but they were mostly find until they decided that the bonus part is lip service and now it doesn't even fit the description in the phb.

A bonus action is still a resource, and one that can only be used on the PC's turn. Only some bonus actions have specific triggers. I guess I just don't understand the concern.

Because now they don't follow any intuitive flow other than "it does what it says" and things that happen in this sort of time frame to are reactions.

It opens the game up to stuff like can one misty step when attacked by an OA.

It's was a lazy fix to a problem they created first place.

Guess I still don't see the issue. We already have things like misty step if attacked from ... well not sure which book or class I just remember it being used.

Whether it's a problem or not, accusations of laziness are unwarranted just because you dislike it.

Nope, not yet, but they have said previously that the recent Stormwreck Isle set was expected to continue past rhe new Core books release.
Yes, that is my recollection as well. Personally, I don't like that set very much, but if they have no immediate plans for a new one it must still be selling decently well.

The water breathing mermaid effect is even worse. You only way to tell what a feature does is to based it on a different feature built off of it.

It's like if they introduced a feat or class feature that allows you do cast while grappled. Including this mean you suddenly can't do so without said feature rather than by the natural reading of the rules.

There probably should be clearer guidelines on what conditions effect casting but that's a separate issue they went screaming away from a long time ago.

Nice how people call things lazy if they mean they don't like it.

The shield mastery feat always had that type of bonus action.
The standard bonus action of two weapon fighting was that kind of bonus action. Need to attack with your light weapon first. Make a second attack.

So why did you not complain 10 years ago?

Does the shield master shove retroactively change the attack that happened beforehand/ simuntaneously or is the attack resolved then you use it?

This is true even if the feat has no trigger because BA aren't reaction so it has the built in limitations that the bonus action description has.

Off topic- the trigger for shieldmaster is dumb and should been cut years ago rather than going around in circles about it's timing.
