It was more than just the maps.
Heck, some monsters were even shaped like graph paper.

Interesting you say that. I get really annoyed when I find area maps that are gridless or worse shudder mapped with hexes.

HEXES ARE FOR OVERLAND TRAVEL, NOT DUNGEONS, FOLKS! :p

Bah, humbug. Hexes are inherently superior unless you are using non-Euclidean geometry and fire squares. How many precious gaming hours have been lost to the blatantly inferior square structure. Is that goblin included in my circle of death? Who knows? Let me break out the template that shows he's kind-of-sort-of on the edge!

Hexes rule, grids are for squares. ;)

We should all be terrified of the living cube of Jello.
Sometimes, with all the oozes, slimes and jell-os, you have to wonder what was going on at Gary’s house at dinner time.

I’m surprised we didn’t get the fruitcake of death back in the MM. You don’t kill it, you just leave it for the next group of explorers...

Closed the poll after a week and 132 responses. Follow-up thread here.

I might be doing some follow-up questions, considering some of the juxtapositions in the results...
