Because I need a god to complete the character. Can't be completed with the 2024 PHB.
No, you don't, not by the literal definition of " eed." You, individually, want that. But one generally who is making a PC to play does not need that to get going
A character is more than mechanics. Background is fluff. It's in the PHB. I guarantee you that racial fluff will be in there. You aren't going see just the name Elf and then elf mechanics with nothing else. Class fluff will be there as well. You can't argue that the PHB is mechanics only when there is a ton of fluff in it.
Actually, having seen the Species pages, pretty close to that.

I want to be able to make my cleric using only the PHB. I can't do that with the 2024 PHB. I can do it with the 3e PHB, the 3.5e PHB, the 4e PHB, and the 5e PHB. It's a step backwards to give me an incomplete PHB and require me to go outside of it to finish a character.
Do we know that the 2024 PHB won't do exactly what the 2014 PHB did, which is provide a list of possible deities from various settings for each domain, in the domain's description? If not, maybe we can wait before getting so upset about deities going unmentioned in the PHB.

What has been reported is that there are no named gods anywhere.

The 1e AD&D PHB does not name a single deity and yet clerics in that edition, by the book, don't even have the option of worshiping abstract entities.

1e PHB is probably the worst PHB. It doesn't even have all the rules to fill out your whole character sheet like saving throws. let alone play the game.

B/X is a better example and it doesn't bother with deities.

I think there will be a line in the 2024 PHB that says "Check with your DM for information on the available deities in the campaign." For games with homebrew gods, having gods in the PHB could be confusing and/or disappointing for players.

Remember that we are getting Greyhawk as an example setting in the DMG. I assume that will include some deities.

I will go out on a limb and agree (to some extent) with Maxperson. While I think you can play a cleric without the name of a god, I think a list of gods would have been far more useful for players than a description of the multiverse. Most campaigns won't visit the outer planes, but they will deal with gods and religions, probably starting with 1st level. Particularly, since the DMG will describe Greyhawk, why not include a list of the Greyhawk gods in the PHB? I think the people at WotC are too invested in the multiverse lately and ignoring some basics.

Right, but you need to know what Setting and what Campaign the character is going to be in to be able to do that, information that doesn't need to be in the PHB - it'll be in the Adventures and Setting Guides and DMG and the DM's homebrew world, and that sort of thing.
