That's an incomplete PHB. To allow every other class to be made completely from the PHB, but not clerics or paladins is pretty bad. They should have included Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, and Dragon Lance at the very least.
? You don't need a god name to play any of those characters. It makes sense to put the world building in the DMG, imo. Much ado about nothing

The gods had no effect on your character in 2014 so your not really losing anything. I agree with @Yaarel that gods should be a setting thing.
Yes, but...

The big settings, and I'll add Eberron which I forgot in my last post, should be in the PHB so when the DM says, we will be playing in Eberron, the players don't need to wait for the DM to show up other books or go on the internet to pick a god for their PC.

A PHB needs everything to make characters. Now obviously obscure settings or homebrew can't be in there, but the big 4 easily can and should be present for players to look through when making clerics and paladins.

Why should I be forced to play a cleric of some nebulous philosophy? I've not done that in the last 40 years and won't be doing it in the future. The commonly used gods from the big four pantheons should be in there for players to use.

I'm also not going to have my PC pray to an unnamed god. Names are extraordinarily commonly used in cleric/paladin roleplay.

Who is forcing you to do anything? The gods will be in the DMG. RAW, you don't need a god. I don't get the angst here at all.

I understand your point, I just disagree with it. I don't think they need to be there or that they have to pick a god to play their character.

IMO, If the DM wants to play Eberron (or any setting), you bring the setting info to session 0 where you make the characters. Keep it out of the PHB is fine with me. I actually prefer this I think.

It has everything needed mechanical. Gods are Setting specific fluff.

The fact remains that I cannot complete my cleric with the PHB. It would be simplicity itself to put in a single page with the list of the four common pantheons. One page would allow me to create a cleric without needing to go outside of the PHB to finish.
