Join the crew of Moonbase Alpha!

Space 1999 RPG.webp

The Space: 1999 Roleplaying Game will allow you to join the crew of Moonbase Alpha! Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (Thunderbirds, Joe 90, and so much more) in 1975, the British show told the story of a moonbase after a nuclear explosion throws the moon into deep space. The game is written by Andrew Peregrine (Dune) and Modiphius Entertainment, and is powered by Modiphius' 2d20 system.

You can sign up for more information at the Gerry Anderson website.

Well, there's a bold move. Interesting intellectual property.

But I hold they aren't counting on nostalgia. I'm old and I barely remember Space 1999 -- and I'm probably the closest to a nostalgia target audience you'll get with a pulse.

Ohh I beg to differ Olgar, I must be very old then as I remember it well. GA stuff is more for the British and the antipodes. More thinky than kinky. This will be massive in Oz.

Space 1999 was a big deal at the time, more talked about in primary school than Doctor Who, I had two toy Eagles and three Airfix kits.

This is something from my youth that, like records and 8-tracks, I have no interest in re-engaging with. But, like records, my son (and other quirky eccentrics of his generation) might eat it up as a nostalgia for a time they never knew that is now ancient history to them. So yeah, I suspect I will end up buying this for him down the road when he tells he he just streamed the entire show series over a weekend or something. Or not! The youth, it is very fickle with what historical curiosities it decides to chase.

I was just a kid when the show was released. I loved the Eagle's design, but I found it to be nonsensical. I clearly remember asking my father how the moon left Earth but was finding different planets every week.
Yeah, the science on the show is...not its strong suit. The writers didn't seem to know the different between the solar system, the galaxy, and the universe.

Ironically, we now believe there are lots of wandering planets in the universe, cast out of their star systems for various reasons (probably not a nuclear bomb, though).

It's still a pretty weak idea for a planet-of-the-week series (a rogue planet would have to be going faster than light for that and then somehow slow down when it encountered other planets), but there's probably an interesting story in being a rogue planet in interstellar space.

I'm familiar with Space 1999 from when it was on a strange hour on a channel I can't remember. I don't think that more than 5-10% of the gaming population have ever heard of it. So I'd expect a small run of product.

But I'm sure this will be someone's idea of a great game, so more power to it an bring it on for them!
