The Space: 1999 Roleplaying Game will allow you to join the crew of Moonbase Alpha! Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (Thunderbirds, Joe 90, and so much more) in 1975, the British show told the story of a moonbase after a nuclear explosion throws the moon into deep space. The game is written by Andrew Peregrine (Dune) and Modiphius Entertainment, and is powered by Modiphius' 2d20 system.

I... huh...

You know what? This feels like IP fishing. I don't know how else to refer to it. Get an old media, get a license deal, and produce a small run to see how it does.

Dunno. Maybe I'm cynical?
Maybe. Short run RPGs based on a niche IP is something the RPG industry brings out a lot. Dallas, Alien, Blade Runner, Avatar Legends, John Carter of Mars, Zorro, The Princess Bride, Hercules and Xena, Buffy, etc. The list is very long.

Given it's relatively low-cost to develop and release an RPG, finding an affordable license to an IP and serving up a game to service that narrowly focused fan base isn't so bad.

Alien and Buffy both got a ton of support, for the record. (I believe that Buffy had three more books nearly done when the license was pulled, in fact.) Blade Runner just got an expansion as well.

Was Dallas a true TTRPG?

I remember some image from "Quark", mainly that giant head on a screen, but then I was very little. Then I only could understand cartoon shows with simple plots, for example Flash Gordon, Hanna-Barbera's characters or Tom&Jerry. I was in the cinema when I watched "Flash Gordon", that with Queens' soundtrack.

Buck Rogers was broadcaster in my land, but in regional channels, not the main. Then the private channels hadn't arrived yet, or at least not in everywhere.

Maybe they sci-fi franchises get old very poorly, but I like that vintage touch.

I watched "UFO", but only a rented movie from the videoclub.

Could old arcade videogames to be adapted to TTRPG?

Could WotC to publish a reboot (with a retro touch) of Buck Rogers? Mixing new and old things.

Space 1999 was a terrible show, and not in fun ways. But it did have some great models. And I think the setup could be a lot of fun to play in, bashing down the pointy bits that I just can’t suspend disbelief for and leaning into all the pulp elements that I can engage with.

I was just a kid when the show was released. I loved the Eagle's design, but I found it to be nonsensical. I clearly remember asking my father how the moon left Earth but was finding different planets every week.

I could be wrong but I think Farscape only got one supplement at most. And at the time, it was the only decent episode guide for the series. I also recall this being the IP that broke AEG from doing more IP ttrpgs as the approval process took a long time.

I've heard from old timers that eventually your overstock in the warehouse nickel and dimes you to death (i.e. that fourth reprinting you did to keep meeting a demand that died off before you could sell through.) It might be better to do one big print run of one book and then when it sells out, it's out - Especially when PDFs can sell for forever and don't take up shelf space.

It's not my favorite business model, but it may be the one that works in this sort of situation.

If a success we might get UFO and Captain Scarlet RPGs, not a fan of 2d20 system but every company nowadays just shoehorns their standard ruleset into their latest IP (Modiphius and Free League have made it their business model).
