I rather doubt another theatrical release, especially for tPM, there's just too much hate for it to make sense.

Well, according to an article I read at theforce.net a while back, TPM may be released in theaters again: Rumor has it that in 2007, George Lucas wants to re-release A New Hope in theaters in 3-D to celebrate Star Wars 30th anniversary. This will allegedly be followed by ESB 3-D in 2008, RotJ 3-D in 2009, TPM 3-D in 2010, AotC 3-D in 2011, and RotS 3-D in 2012.

Then again, this news is several months old, so it'll be interesting to see if it actually comes to pass.

If you can't handle 15 hours of Star Wars, JC, then I'm sorry but you're no longer a fan. :p ;)
This is true. I'll hand in my badge. :)

I can certainly handle 15 hours of Star Wars. It's just a matter of how many times can I get enough people together to do it. These kind of things have always been events for me. Ya know?

John, your run times don't accoun for credits, which I'm sure would be skipped and can make a big time difference (particularly with the LotR movies).
This is true. Some of the film (like LotR & Star Wars) have credits that last 10+ minutes. However, sometimes people like to watch the credits even if they've seen the movie before. But either way I figure than any extra time can be accounted for in other ways (like having to walk the dog, grab a smoke, take extra time to make dinner/snacks, etc).

I've always believed that. The Phantom Menace was probably the single most highly-anticipated movie in history;
I would remove the probably completely. There hasn't been a single film ever that was more anticipated than The Phantom Menace. I can't think of a single one that's even come close. There probably won't be another that matches it in our lifetime.

I read that as well. Directors like Lucas, Rodriguez and a few others that I can't recall at the moment are really into the technology. And they are right. Theatrical releases will continue to decline in sales until the movie industry can give the public a better or different experience than they can currently get at home. 3D is one of those ways.

I don't know about the release dates but they sound familiar. And I'm certainly not surprised that they would be re-released to the theaters. It's happened with other classics, why not Star Wars. Again.

Wow. I like the list of all the movie marathons (with running times!). Thanks, John.
No problem. It was actually kinda fun. :)

Now, how long would a Kurosawa Samurai movie marathon last? (Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Ran, Rashamon, Yojimbo, probably several others I'm forgetting.) I'm betting I don't want to know... Just Seven Samurai is long, throw in all the other films and it would have to be well over 20 hours.

Aw heck, I've got time to waste at work, I'll figure it out. Run times from IMDB. (Wow, I didn't know Kurosawa had so many films, I'll only go with the Samurai ones that I know of/have heard good things about/have seen, but I'm no scholor, so I may miss some):

Ran 160 min
Kagemusha 162 min
Yojimbo 75 min
The Hidden Fortress 126 min
Throne of Blood 105 min
The Seven Samurai 206 min
Rashômon 88 min

TOTAL Run Time: 922 min == Around 15 and half hours. Add in breaks, and you're looking at 17.5 hours +.

Not as bad as I thought, but still, some marathon. Better like subtitles if you try this one.
I was thinking about doing this one as well but forgot as I went along. :) Gracias.

This little excerise also got me thinking about themes. But I'll leave that for another thread as I've hijacked enough for one day...

Probably Gone with the Wind could compete with anticipation levels. There was a lot of hype and gossip surrounding it before its original release way back in the 30s, and the fact that the book was extremely popular also fueled a great deal of anticipation.

I'm sure there was anticipation, but I doubt it had the fervor that TPM did. People simply weren't as connected as we are now (internet, TV, etc). But then again, I wasn't around in that time period.

Another thing to consider is that Star Wars is part of our culture. GwtW was most watched movie ever in the theaters but (just like Titanic) I dunno if it had the same impact that Star Wars had on culture. But I do agree that it may be the only other film to come close.
