What fonts and font size do you use

I'll admit, I'm kinda a font snob. So much so that I annoy other people when I point out fonts and their names. Our fonts are chosen per project. Violet Dawn has its own set style, and I try and find fonts that accommodate that well. In addition, I try not to use any fonts which are seen a lot. Examples would be asrafel, morpheus, stonecross, papyrus, scythe, celtic, etc.

Before we choose fonts for a new project, I usually look through what I have and experiment with various font families. I also like to use My Fonts for deciding what to go with as I can group them into font albums and evaluate how they look. I also don't mind payng money for fonts, because most other publishers just use what is readily available. One of the new fonts I just picked for the Avadnu Primer was like $60, but I think its worth it.

The style of the font (serif or sans serif), the line space, kerning and tracking, and readibility are what dictate the point size of a font. I have a rough idea of what I'm aiming for, but it isn't until I sit down and work on a mock layout that I can come up with hard and fast numbers.

I know this is more of an objective answer, but I hope it helps.

Times New Roman or Bookman Old Times.

12 points, 10 or 11 for side notes.

24 points for headers.

I've tried smaller, but I prefer easy-to-read.

Hrmm. Interesting. I've been using 10 point Comic Sans MS for text, 12 and 16 for headers and title, and 8 for notes - but I wasn't sure if the size was right for general consumption.

Does someone know the size/type of font used by WOTC?

Well, keep in mind that I only do PDF, and my products contain a printable portrait version, and an onscreen landscape version.

I've made a couple products in 10 point, but I always found it to be too small.

My books tend to turn out well. Here:

There are demos available for each of my books, and I think they look fine, and so do my customers.

I have their entire font library at home. Let me check and get back to you. Which fonts do you mean specifically? Each of their lines uses different fonts. Do you mean the ones in the core rulebooks?

I typically use High Tower Text (11 pt) for the body text of our newer releases, and Amerika as the header font. This is the combination used in the E.N.Arsenal set as well as Secrets of Theurgy.

Hmmm. Fret...fret....fret.... :heh: I'll print up my work in 10, 11, and 12 point and compare how easy they are to read. I lean towards the smaller fonts as a result of my reaction to some oversized print I've seen books - the feeling that the font was pumped up to stretch out the size of the work (well, that and I'm neurotic paranoid.....). It just seems like I can't fit much text in the columns (using 2 column with occasional side bar) - perhaps I just use too much margin (1" to each side and top/bottom and just over 1/2" between columns).
My character sheets go down to 6-8 point for minor details - I'll need reading glasses if I keep this up!

Man, I have stuff at 2.5 point on my character sheets. (Granted, it's only a reminder of the ability score used by a modifier, still....)

I do all my PDFs at .75 inch margins on the side .9" top and bottom and use a .2" gutter between columns. If I ever went POD, I'd probably switch to 1" inner and .5" outer margins. (As all my tables are aligned on the margins, this should be doable without having to move stuff manually.)

That gets me 3.4" per column (and it's probably really ugly on A4 paper, though no European customer has ever complained). I've recently bumped up to 10 point. My first two books and all my two pagers are 9-point Times Roman with some tables at 8-point. I find anything over 11-point wasteful. Especially if the customer is printing it out.

Judging by my typometer, the size for their headlines is 18, 12 and 10 points, and the main text is 8 points. But take that with a grain of salt, it has been ages since I last used a typometer (8 points for the main text seems too low...).

Not sure of the font, but the main text is pretty times-new-romanish. Don't know what font they used for headlines.
