D&D (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

So far its mainly been a lot of polishing, but I haven't seen too much that is really changing how the game is played, but we will see as more is revealed.

Perhaps I am much more interested to see how magic item/monster design might ahve gotten changed (or will we finally have a point to useless gold?) those things would have a much bigger interest to me.

It's a lot of tiny changes. I do like 5.24 for it - just massaging things around a little bit.

I'd say the biggest thing you'd notice if people were playing the new edition next to you, would be every wizard/sorcerer running around in medium armor + shield.

They can call it whatever they want but at the end of the day WotC will expect to ceryone to buy a new Core 3 every 5-10 years. With probably some major update book like Tasha’s in the middle.
I would rather they just revise the PHB every 5 years than put out an optional patch. MM and DMG can have a lower cadence.

So long as they don't expect me to buy a new core 3 every two years like GW they can do whatever they want.

I'm picking up the new DMG, not sure about the others.

Apparently so because if that wasn't the case, we'd be having a very different discussion on a new edition instead of just a revision.
They called 2e a new edition, but I think it was more of a revision until they started patching it with all the players options and complete handbooks.

I’ll say what I’ve said for a year or more; if it isn’t an entirely new edition, make standalone expansions, not revisions.

I waited a long long time for my Necrons and SoB update. I never got that SoB update (as I dropped out before they got their real update book).

In the 50th Anniversary 2E game they played on WotCs Youtube channel the old designers said the problem with update expansions is you can't create anything else for them because you can't assume everyone bought the update expansion book.

More classes and more subclasses and races etc are easy but any real change will have a limit, until they codify it all in a "New Core 3! Pre-Order now!".

I agree, but once they started introducing the complete books with kits, all the campaign settings with mechanics and PC creation rules specific to those settings it was totally a different edition from 1E. Then the Players Options books made 2E something different altogether from what was released in 89 and even the revisions of the mid 90s for those who used them. I remember using the Players Options when they came out and the game immediately felt very different in some aspects, and I always thought of them as the 3E test drive.
