Was it? Or was it designed around the pillar that matters to the designers and also Rangers, Warlocks and Bards?

A started design goal was to look at three pillars of play. Whether success of that design goal occured could be debated.

Even so, it appears that 5e24 may be built around a different set of design goals.

They just added skill bonuses for martial characters.

Their design goal is to update it, fix the balance issues, without messing things up. It's the best selling edition ever, and ther don't want to loose that.

No mention of the 3 pillars one way or the other.

They've spoken of the other two pillars in the videos, implying that they have done some improvements there. We have no idea if those improvements go beyond the addition of the codified Search, Study, and Influence Actions, and that (for example) Barbarians and Fighters got ways to spend combat features out of combat - so we don't know how MUCH the other pillars have been improved.

But we DO know that they have made attempts to improve them. And we know for sure that 2024 does not focus MORE on combat than 2014 did.

I agree that there was no specific mention of pillars. I was gauging a change in focus based upon how some of the class changes have been approached. What are the metrics being used to determine balance?

I like the idea of spending dice for other effects. I also like having a little more complexity.

Still, I believe there will be playstyle changes due to changes in the methodology behind designing the component parts of the game.

For example, backgrounds in 2014 were a collection of skills coupled with a Background Feature built around interacting with the social and exploration pillars.

In contrast, backgrounds in 2024 are the source of attribute modifiers, skills, and a feat (which were allegedly "optional" before). Features no longer exist.
