Downtown Indianapolis Food [New one every day!]

Another good one that we ate at last year was Houlihans. There are a couple of them in Kansas City, and the food is most excellent. It is a tad on the pricy side, though, but after a long day, that iced tea there really hit the spot. They have a varied menu, with offerings such as pasta, and seafood, steak, and chicken.

I'll try to stick to independants on this thread. They are what makes downtown Indy unique.

Here's today's:

The Slippery Noodle Inn
372 S. Meridian St.
Indianapolis, IN 46225
(317) 631-6974

This is a blues bar that claims to be the oldest bar in Indiana. It was once a brothel and they say that John Dillenger and his crew used one of the back walls for target practice. They have live music on the weekends.

Its your basic pub-grub but my favorites include the Blue Hen (chicken sandwich with bacon and your choice of cheese) and the Italian Beef Sandwich. The Cajun Fries are good too, but you pay extra for them.

I've never been a big fan of the Slippery Noodle, but let me reccomend someplace for the beer drinkers:

BW3's.

I know, I know, but the downtown BW3's, which is 1 block from the mall on Maryland, has the BEST beer selection on tap in Indy. They have a rediculous number of micro's and imports on tap, and a huge selection of others in bottles.

Claddagh's Irish Pub
234 S. Meridian Street

It's not faux Irish, either in menu or decor. You'll find no "shamrocks" on the walls here. Their rasher sandwich is excellent, and they let you smoke a pipe if you've a mind to.

Let's talk more about late-nite eats.

Last call (for alcohol) is 2:00am but the restaurants stops serving food at 10 or 11pm. Except for Steak & Shake, what else is open for the gamer who plays a late evening game, finish at 11 (or even 1:00am!) and is hungry. Milwaukee had more places open at night. I'm not trying to play the "ugly New Yorker" here, but I am used to 24 hour restaurants.

To the Indy residents: What's open late night??

The only thing I can think of downtown open late nights is Steak 'n Shake (the White Castle on South Street might be open past midnight too, but it's not open 24 hrs/day). If you want to drive out of downtown a bit, you can get Denny's.

There's a reason Indianapolis is sometimes called Naptown. It seems like nothing decent is open late until you like to dance and get drunk.

(wonders if he should offer post-midnight cooking services during GenCon for a small fee)

This is true all over the US, I suspect, except for the largest cities, like New York, Chicago, San Francisco and L.A. and so forth.

Welcome to the real world. In the vast majority of the industrialized world, one cannot expect anything but saloons and similar establishments to be open extremely late. This is reality for far more places than not. You play Ugly New Yorker with great enthusiasm, whether you are trying to or not.
