Colossi usually have pilot and crew, they are more like walkers than droids. That’s in the book. Which also implies exceptions exist.

However, everything about this adventure is OTT, so I think it’s more likely an elder brain wired into a colossus.

Just to confirm that it's some sort of huge elder-brain powered mecha as others have said, you can see the eyes and nose in light gray in front of the elder brain, towards the bottom of the illustration.
