D&D 5E Underrated Monsters

Sometimes the biggest challenges come in the smallest packages. Whether that's kobolds or goblins, hit-and-run tactics and an enemy that does everything within their power to never have a direct confrontation and absolutely never ever fight fair can be fun now and then. Popping out of small openings and then retreating into tunnels that have choke points that go to tiny so medium creatures just get stuck? Tons of options to make the weakest monsters out there into a threat.

Not something I use often and a well known trope to people who have heard of Tucker's Kobolds, but still an underrated threat.

Gnolls. I hear a lot about orcs and goblins, but not nearly as much about gnolls. Our DM had a warband of gnolls that harassed us for almost 10 levels before we were able to wipe them out.

I feel like a really cool campaign could be made with the Star Spawn. Probably not an underrated monster. I just think the concept is cool and I don't think I've seen them used.

I think on the whole they have suffered from a lack of cool art. But I've certainly used them.

Giant Rats killed many of my halfling thieves. Them and Hobgoblins with the extra damage power when there is more than one around you.

In our last session 3 level 6 characters fell to a (CR 7) Bheur Hag.

She ate one of the characters in front of them and left the other 2 to live with the horror of witnessing it (they both failed their wisdom save).

I’m partial to Giant and Phase spiders, especially if I can create a lair for them with hanging platforms they can maneuver around and potential party goodies buried amidst the webbing.
