Quick Question About Spells Like "Darkness"

Clefton Twain

First Post
The spell Darkness gives a "20-foot radius" as the area. Does this mean 20 feet up and down as well? This is kind of an inane question and probably has an obvious answer but it doesn't actually give an area or say it's a spread, emanation etc. And if it doesn't go 20 feet up and down also, how far up and down *does* it go? Does it persist through solid barriers?

It says that if the object is placed under a lightproof covering, the spell is blocked. So it won't extend beyond floors or ceilings.

I always envisioned it as a sphere with a 20-foot radius. Also, I believe it is supposed to be an emanation.

Like a light spell, darkness does not persist through solid barriers. If you cast Darkness on a small marble and close your fist around it, the darkness doesn't radiate beyond your hand.

Spells with a radius affect a sphere, unless otherwise specified. Compare to the description of Ice Storm, which affects a cylinder 20' radius x 40' high.
