Hong, I wasn't trying to be hostile, please don't call me stupid.
Get used to it. He's a pet of the moderators here and gets a free pass for his behaviour.

At least that's the only conclusion I can come to seeing as I've seen him do similar things to this DOZENS of times and have reported similar instances several times and gotten responses like, "I don't see what the problem is," and "He's just being hong."

Once or twice as a slip-up when angry or frustrated every so often is excusable, IMO. But constant, recurrent, excessive abuse is little more than net-bullying. But then 'teh clique' has always played favourites here...

Perhaps the solution is to 'play hong'. He calls you stupid, call him stupid. Twist his words. Be downright nasty, and put a  smiley at the end and you'll be all right. Maybe we should have a whole forum for playing Hong. Sorta like YB! 'cept more...insulting. It could be fun!:D

Um... probably to a certain degree. I really don't care as much about art in books as some people seem to. For the most part, it flies under my radar. Color art usually catches my eye, as does really good B&W.

Honestly, I don't mind the amateurish artwork in the 1E DMG. I'd rather have those than most of the anime I've seen, in all honesty.

Anime just turns me off, big time. Bad art, bad plots, nothing really redeeming IMHO. Of course, I'll fully acknowledge that I'm not an anime expert and there may be some anime that I really would like. It doesn't hurt me to look at a few pictures, so I appreciate people posting some samples/links.

Cassander, those Dragonlance images are horrid. I _think_ the artist has some skill, but the style is so bad that I can't tell for sure. There's no way I'd ever buy a book with that sort of art in it -- I couldn't take it seriously.

Hellhound, pretty much the same goes for the Akira art, just to a lesser degree. If that image was on the cover, I probably wouldn't ever pick it up, unless someone said it was an _awesome_ book. If it was, I'd either thumb through it and get a couple of goodies (something I only rarely do) or I'd buy it and read it then copy the rules to my "homerules" list. It could never be a regularly used reference item.

The Ghost in the Shell image is a maybe. That sort of art doesn't really turn me off. I'd need to get a look at more of it to say for sure, but it's probably in that category that's unremarkable for the most part. Wouldn't affect my opinion of the book one way or the other, in all probability.

Jester47, That's not a bad picture. Not exactly my favorite, but I could see enjoying small doses of it. Again, I'd need to see more to get a real feel for the style. Even if I did like it some, there still seems to be something "off" to it. It's a bit like the iconics in the 3E PH, I can't put my finger on it, but there's something that sits wrong.

Honestly, I miss the old Elmore and Easley artwork. Those guys did great work. Granted, the subject matter may a bit to much into the chain-mail-bikinis, but the _style_ of art is great, especially Elmore's.

It's also an awesome movie, and I'm far from a major Anime fan...

The above goes to a site concerning a re-digitization of the movie. The images are much cleaner.

Don't judge a style based on only a small exposure to it. And there aren't all that many people that HAVE a lot of exposure to Manga art styles, it seems.

You have a good point, but i'm not sure you ment to make it... :)

If most people don't have a lot of exposure to manga art styles you're basically saying that a lot of the styles of manga are negativly viewed by most people because they can only judge based upon a small exposure to it. regardless of wether or not there is good manga (there is) its more about what the majority of people think about the style in general. When they think of the style, they tend to think of the less acceptable type of manga.

If its always looked like crap, they'll think all of it looks like crap. If you're trying to educate people about manga, doing it in your RPG book that you've spent a few K's on is probably not the best way.

Now, admittedly, some anime styles might not fit with what is considered the standard of modern fantasy in the West. For instance, this wouldn't fit:

. . . and I guess some people just don't like sultry ladies:

. . . but overall I think the West has an obsession with Renaissance-esque oil painters.

I personally just like fantasy art that looks magical, regardless of the style.

I'm pretty flexible as to the art style's I like. I still love Todd Lockwood's work, but I know a skilled artist when I see one, and I appreciate such skill, regardless of the style an artist chooses to practice.

I don't care much for anime-style art, but I wouldn't hold that against a book unless the art was completely out of context with the book's content -- which is hard to define but falls into the "I know it when I see it" category.

-edited out hongzinging.

Seriously though - I have no problem with anime in a book. Hell, I'll put up with any art, as long as its drawn properly. Some of the drek ive got in some of my books. bleagh.

(oh, and if the Unfeasibly Large Breasts syndrome can be kept down a bit, that would be good. The griping about AP products is bad enough as it is.)

-edit - waaaay to late on the hongzinging. Bah.

Elmore had his moment in the sun, but he's definitely lost it. I mean, could you get any more dry than this? Oh my, I appear to be a titan. Ho hum. Look at the time.
