I imagine giants as archinemesis of dragons, and a mutual distrust among giants and pantheons, remains of a old titanomanchy. Giants believe to be blood of primal titans, the original owners of the divine spark, and this was stolen by the deities. Giants want to recover their rights and that "divine spark". Some giants reclaim the place of their ancestors, but would rather certain "sparks" better in the deities' hands than in rival giant clans.

Dwarves and gnomes have got their own historical reasons to dislike giants, the previous lords of their slavered ancestors. And the giants can be surprised if their tried to attack a gnome or dwarf stronghold, the defenders can use boots with runic spells of "jump", or these can fight with the help of giant beasts, for example dire bears.
