Where to start watching Torchwood?

I watched the first couple of Torchwood episodes and decided it was a little too dreary for my tastes. I've heard it's significantly improved over time though. Where should I pick up watching?

I didn't watch past the first series (I didn't even bother with the season ender of the first series) so I can't give you much concrete help, other than point out one or two episodes that I thought rose above the others:

#3 (Ghost machine)
#9 (Random shoes)

I've heard the same thing. I watched the first disc and while it was OK, I wasn't impressed enough to want to immediately jump back in. I've been told that the second season is a great, great improvement so maybe just start there?

Unless you are a serious Who fan, then I really wouldn't bother with Torchwood at all. It doesn't really get any better. I would have stopped watching it, but the g/f likes it. But then she is Welsh and is biased :)

That said the last episode of the last series was ok...

I watch it for the Doctor Who tie-ins, basically. If it wasn't part of the Whoniverse, I don't think I'd watch it at all.

Not really. Although the average quality of the episodes is a bit better, the first season had a couple of great episodes ("Random Shoes" and "They Keep on Killing Suzie"), and the second season has nothing that comes close to rivalling these.

I found Torchwood interesting enough to watch the first time it was on, but have no interest in seeing it again, either on DVD or in rerun. Make of that what you will.

If you didn't like the first couple of episodes, you probably won't want to watch the rest. Let's put it this way, I actually liked the first few episodes, and I gave up on it just before the end of the first season.

Oh, I was lured back for season two when I heard the "it gets better" lines. After a few episodes, I realized that wasn't true. If you're a big Dr. Who fan, you might want to check out the Martha Jones episodes, but, otherwise it really isn't worth it.

Torchwood clearly isn't to everyone's taste. I love it however. Most episodes at least pass the "watchability" test on my personal scale, and a few are really great. "The Keep Killing Suzie" was the best episode of season 1 from my PoV, and from Season 2, I would highly recommend "Meat."

Yes and characters from Doctor who appear all the time although never

the Doctor himself (disappointing) the creepiest one was with the evil circus people wo came out of movie screens and took people souls and put them in a bottle
