What videogames are you playing in 2025?

I'm trying to decide if to buy a Steam Deck, X-Box, Switch(2?) or something else. Any comments?
1) Definitely don't buy an Xbox. Microsoft have openly stated they're moving away from having any exclusives for it, because they conclusively lost the console war this generation, and are likely to lose it next generation (if they even compete, though I imagine they will). Whereas the PS5 has a ton of exclusives, including stuff that was (and still is) exclusive to the PS4.

If you're considering getting an actual console, go with PS5 or PS5 Pro (depending on budget).

2) Steam Deck vs Switch/Switch 2 is a very different choice.

They're relatively similarly priced - get the OLED models of Steam Deck or Switch 1 if you get them (they're just better, including in ways beyond the OLED screen) - but with Steam Deck, you can play most of the games you have on Steam, and kind of shockingly well in most cases. So you have an existing, and probably significant library - whether it's games you actually want to play on portable is a different question. With either Switch, you're going to have to build up a library from scratch, and Nintendo generally doesn't do sales much, and when they do do sales, they tend to be fairly pathetic discounts. On the other hand it's literally the only (legal) way to play Nintendo exclusive games, of which there are large numbers, and they tend to be good - if you're into that sort of thing. I would suggest looking into Switch exclusives if that's potentially of interest - there's a lot of Zelda, Mario, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros etc. that isn't available elsewhere. Switch 2 is going to be a little more expensive and realistically, is going to be a PITA to actually buy this year. Also the games will be more expensive. On the other hand, it's pretty powerful, and has some cool exclusives and so on.

Parter wants me to get handheld so I spend more time with her.
Does she game at all or is willing to try games at all? If so, I'd lean towards the Switch or Switch 2 because it's both good as a handheld, and good as a thing plugged into the TV for multiplayer games, and has a lot of friendly/fun co-op games and so on.

If not, certainly most price-effective one is likely to be the Steam Deck - it's not amazingly powerful or anything, but a lot of games have custom settings for it, and thus even some recent AAAs have 30-40 FPS on it, with those settings.

She likes word games and puzzles, and the kind of sports games where you get some exercise. Main reason the Switch is up for consideration at all. I'm not into the cutesy stuff that is so common on Nintendo.
I dunno if the Switch has much in the way of word games, but it has a bazillion million games so probably in there. Puzzle-wise, it definitely has stuff, and even some interesting co-op puzzle stuff like Snipperclips (which is a lot of fun to play with my wife). Sports games which make you exercise is a thing, albeit not as much as it was on the Wii. The game we like for exercise is Just Dance (any year), but that does require you to have the space and willingness to dance around in front of the TV (essentially on the spot but still).

That'll all be on the Switch 2 as well of course.

No, I don’t have any PS. I usually game on my PC (and have a Steam library) but it’s getting a bit old and slow for gaming these days, whilst remaining fine for work. The grandchildren have Switch and Xbox. Partner wants me to get handheld so I spend more time with her.

Wife has switch. It's good for casuals and if you like Nintendo games. Ganes are expensive.

She also bought a portal for the ps5. She plays BG3 on that.

PS5 is better than Xbox. I say that as an Xbox fan. They messed up this generation.

Xbox has one big thing going for it. Gamepass. You pay a subscription fee and get access to 200 odd games or more. You'll never play all of them so it's fantastic value. Last I looked Fallout and Mass Effect trilogy is on it. If you like car racing games Forza is great. How much it costs in your country no idea. Best for backwards compatability. I've ran random original Xbox and 360 games on mine. It doesn't gave the exclusive titles though.

Both Xbox and PS5 are the worst generation in terms of original titles. There's a lot of updated PS4 and Xbox games though. Both have very similar stores and do 75% off sales or whatever. You can get gold pack games for peanuts and those games may be a year or two old with all DLCs. Pretty game from 2016 is still pretty generally. PS5 is better than Xbox but not by much in terms of exclusives (they're both anemic vs earlier generations)

Wife loves her switch but has commented on the price of its faces. Sales are few and far between and modest by comparison. Best unique and exclusive titles assuming you like Nintendo games.

Xbox game pass also applies to PC. You'll have to look into that more though. Xbox and PS4/5 are functionally the same for running things like Netflix, Disney+ or whatever through. Mate has new Xbox that and PS5 both boot up damn fast compared to PS4/Xboxone.

They're all good to some extent assuming you're into what they're offering.

Ask your wife how much money you want to throw at it. PS5+portal us great but expensive. Switch is more casual/Nintendo orientated and expensive. Xbox best value for money vs time, PS5 probably best machine and UI.

I have learned a new to describe morthal from skyrim " it looked ghetto scary."

Speaking of skyrim (also fallout 4), one thing the Xbox version has over the PS version is that mods are allowed to add new assets.

Hi, do you like designing dungeons, or dungeon crawling, and video games? Do you like solving puzzles and combing through details in your environment to figure out both lore and progress?

Allow me to introduce you to your new favorite game, Blue Prince. Seems simple enough to start, in both gameplay and story. It is anything but.
