what does "per" mean?

I.E., does it round up or down?

If an entry says something like "1 time per 4 levels," does that mean zero times for levels 1, 2, and 3; 1 time for levels 4, 5, 6, and 7; 2 times for levels 8, 9, 10, 11; and so on?

Or does it mean: 1 time for levels 1-4, 2 times for levels 5-8, 3 times for level 9-12, and so on?

I realize the general rule in 3rd Edition D&D is "round down," but since in this case the expression doesn't directly use division or fractions, I wasn't sure.

Thanks in advance,

Like Shiled of Faith (I think) or Magical Vestments. +1 enhancment bonus to AC every 4 levles. I understand the question. Some rules I have seen, Character level/"Per Level" = the Bonus with some rounding, but that doesn't hold water.

For example 4th Level Cleric casting magical vestment. 4/4 = 1 for the enhancement bonus. Level 3 Cleric 3/4= .75 or Round up to 1.

Level 5 Cleric , 5/4 = 1.25 Now does that round up to 2 or down to 1. In my game I round up for that type of thing.

I hope I made some sense.

Generally down.

Usually, a spell can't be cast until you're a higher level than that number anyway...

Example : Greater Magic Weapon, +1 per 3 caster levels.

If you could cast it at CL 1 or 2, it would provide a +0 enhancement bonus. But you can't cast it until CL5, when it gives +1. At CL6, it goes up to +2, and maxes out at level 15 (not level 13).

Note that a spell like Magic Missile phrases it as "one extra missile per two levels after the first".

Hmmm.....i think hes talking about spells. Such as some saying how many creatures it will affect "1 creature per 2 levels" or some such. or spell distances "25 ft + 5ft/2 levels"

Unless it says anytthing else in the description of the ability, you should round down, dropping all fractions, as per the PHB p. 275.

For example 4th Level Cleric casting magical vestment. 4/4 = 1 for the enhancement bonus. Level 3 Cleric 3/4= .75 or Round up to 1.

Note that a Clr-4 or Clr-3 can't cast Magic Vestment.

It's first cast at 5th level, for a +1 bonus. +2 kicks in at 8th.

That's a fine example, and there are others in the Player's Handbook spells and elsewhere.

The one that prompted me to finally ask was from Monster Manual II. It says, for example, that the number of feats a humanoid gets is 1 + 1 per 4 EHD (Extra Hit Dice).

I also think rounding up in this case is the right answer, but I've never sen an official defintion/ruling.

Hmm... If you round up, a medium-size humanoid with 3 (if you round .5+ up) or 4 HD should have 2 feats.

There ain't any of those in MM (MM1, that is), though, so I can't tell... :p
Still, I'm inclined to round down unless explicitly told to do otherwise.
