Using shield spell to protect others.

I am playing a 3rd edition game and I was wondering if the shield spell to gives the other characters behind me any protection.
The spell description says that it provides 3/4 cover(+7 AC and +3 to reflex saves against attacks that affect an area).

Shield has a personal range so you can only cast it on yourself.

The OP is using the 3.0 version of the spell, it was completely face-lifted in 3.5. Back then, it actually made a wall-like force barrier that protected you from one side (your choice) and just ingeneral worked very differently. I don't have my 3.0 book anymore so I can't really answer the question, though.

The spell grants you the cover.

You in turn could stand between an ally and a range attack, but that would only give your ally as much cover as anyone standing between them and a ranged attacker.
