Spell cards isn't Wotcs idea, it was some fans back during the 3.x days. They started using a tool for making cards for MtG and other TCGs (I believe it was Magic Set Editor) and were getting very popular until Wotc hit them with the decease and desist legal letters.

They really weren't were the idea of 3.x fans.

From what I can see I won't be buying this product as a stand alone item. if it came bundled with the adventure then fine. there is nothing to make me want to purchase it though.

Yeah I agree, Phandelver is excellent, I've run HotDQ was very disappointed. I'll probably write a follow up to Lost Mines for my group.

I like their spell cards idea, but this DMG screen is a poor idea imo. I would never use it compared to the proper generic one with all the useful gaming stuff on it. I suspect this will be the first and last of these adventure based screens.

That would be a shame, IMO. Sure, this screen doesn't appear to be the best, but that doesn't mean the concept is flawed. Though an adventure-specific screen (like a map pack, or set of item cards, or, really, most other support materials for an AP) should ideally be worked on by the same company who produce the adventure itself.

No, I think that the concept is pretty flawed. Putting a picture on the inside of a DM screen of a bad guy is pretty much a waste of space.

On the other hand, putting that picture on the outside of a DM screen for reoccurring villains that are really hard to kill so that the players see them over and over again, that idea might have some merit (course, telegraphing what looks like a Red Wizard of Thay might not be the best idea). Probably not as much merit as Dragons and Beholders and Rust Monsters and Devils, but maybe a little merit. The town maps are ok on the inside cover if they are maps that will be used for the vast majority of an entire campaign, but villain pictures?

Even my high school aged daughter (who is our DM) saw these last night and said "What the?".

The concept just doesn't make any sense.

I'd rather see a plug and play adventure screen with see through pockets that allowed DMs to put whatever information / pictures that he wanted to on the inside and outside of the DM screen. That would be useful. This? Not so much.

The concept is "adventure-specific DM screen". That doesn't say anything about putting villain pictures on the inside - that's just an example of the concept done badly.

But a screen specific to, say, "Kingmaker" could provide summaries of the key kingdom-building rules on the inside, or "Skull & Shackles" could summarise the rules for loot (or ship-to-ship combat, or whatever), and so on. Heck, depending on the campaign, pictures of the villains may not be out of place - a heavily political campaign could be well served providing a map of the key factions and the interactions between them (see "Chicago by Night" for examples).

And, of course, there was a significant amount of artwork produced for "Tyranny of Dragons" (or "Kingmaker", "Skull & Shackles", or whatever), so selection something non-spoilery for the outside of the screen shouldn't be too difficult, and could provide a more flavourful pic than just generic demons & giants.

I'd rather see a plug and play adventure screen with see through pockets that allowed DMs to put whatever information / pictures that he wanted to on the inside and outside of the DM screen.

That's a good idea.
