Thing is with all these things going away... something we don't know about yet will be next. Forum users didn't see Facebook coming, we didn't see Twitter coming, or TikTok--and we probably won't see the next thing coming either. It might not even look like social media as we understand it. In 10 years we might be talking about some platform with a form factor that we can't even imagine right now.

Or not. Who knows!

The overall vibe I am getting from Reddit is that people are in three different camps: people who have switched to BlueSky, people who are staying with Twitter, and people who weren't on Twitter to begin with. It's hard to tell which is the larger group, but if this small poll is any indicator:

BlueSky Converts > Never Twitters > Twitter Loyalists.
As of the time I found this thread Twitter is seventh behind bluesky, never twitters, quit the scene, discord, mastadon, and facebook

I am on all the things for work. I've scaled Twitter back to the bare minimum, but every time I go there, not only does it increasingly not work (it sometimes six or seven tries to get the trending topics to show), it's now almost entirely awfulness, which I expect to accelerate.

Bluesky posters can at times be too self-congratulatory -- all the post-Twitter sites have elements of "aren't we smart for getting out?" -- but the overall quality of conversation, on all topics, is much, much better. Even the political fights are nicer.

Well, more properly, people haven't been willing to pay for them so far.

If someone came up with a good subscription service, that doesn't need the ad revenue, these days people might choose that.
Maybe....the subscriptions are quickly destroying people's budgets. I was one of the first to advocate monthly subs to ENW and CM but the effect of subs has not been....good.

That may be self-selection. I was really disappointed recently when I thought folks may return to CM but several took one look and made the judgement call that they do not want to associate with folks that they used to hangout and game with even if they did not like their opinions in other areas.

The overall community used to be more of a big tent but things are devolving into more tribal communities.

I used FB and Twitter for very different things.

FB is just people I regularly associate with and can stand (and almost all my posts are just friends and sometimes friends of friends) and some interest groups, and is how I keep in touch with lots of people. I mostly share personal updates or things I think are interesting on FB, with not many controversial things (or if they are, they're pretty carefully phrased and referenced). I don't even see most of the ads on FB as they go by (although the ones with pretty maps in them trick me into clicking).

Twitter was things I didn't mind sharing with the world - with one account for personal opinions and one for work things. Twitter also had Gail Simone, NYT Pitchbot, Terrible Maps, etc...

Still on FB and switched the personal Twitter things to Bluesky. I have a work account on both Twitter and Bluesky but don't actively use the Twitter one and might nuke it as Bluesky gets a higher density. (So my answer to the question in the poll was Bluesky).

I usse Discord whenever an online ttRPG campaign I'm in is using it. Spawn's scout group uses BAND. And I'm on here.
