I haven't even seen this episode yet but your description illustrates my major gripe with this series.

There is too much going on for me. I can still keep up. That's not the issue. The problem is that nothing seems to get resolved and no one story gets the treatment I think it should.

Despite that, I still enjoy it. Eric's past is the most interesting for me as wel as Sookie's ability.

I'm loving how much is going on, and history seems to show that things get resolved... I think everything from season 1 is wrapped up (except the basic mystery of what Sookie's powers are, exactly), and most everything from season 2, except for Sam's trying to deal with his biological family. And, of course, the final-episode stuff that sparked season 3.

I hadn't been following the series much but between:

[sblock]Jason and the implication of Crystal being some kind of fairy (wife's guess) or Nymph (my guess) and Sookie's Force Push at the end of the show, I think we may just see a strong Fey element enter into the story. I have to say though I am tired of the Vamp v. Were crap that has been springing up over the past decade. Vamp, Were, and Fey love triangle, now that I could get into.[/sblock]

The big story that I think could be axed is Jason's. I'm reasonably sure I know where it's going (spoilery hint: watch Jason's webisode) and so I get how it fits. I'm just finding it tedious and irrelevant. I was thinking the same thing about Sam's story, but tonight I felt it gel a lot more, thanks to Tommy's interactions with Jessica and Lafayette. The brothers watching animal documentaries was awesome.

The problem is that all of the action is going on in Mississippi, and almost nothing is going on in Bon Temps. To keep (especially) Jason and Sam on the show, we're getting these stories that don't advance the overall plot much at all. It's reminiscent of how dragged out the Maenad story was last season. Of course, that's a fundamental problem stemming from the show being an adaptation of the books - they don't happen to be involved in this story. Fine for books, not so much for television shows.

I'd rather we get one or two scenes of the Bon Temps stuff, and use the rest to flesh out what's going on in Mississippi. At the very least, flesh out the characters a little more, or the world. For example, how does Alcide/weres feel about Sam/shifters? Are there other were-creatures? Why haven't they been discovered or revealed themselves now that the vampires have? There was a lot of that in the first couple of seasons, but now it's sadly missing.

Regarding Fast Learner's list, I'm betting we (the audience) find out what Sookie is in the next episode. It seemed to me that the King recognized what Sookie was, even if she doesn't. Given the emphasis on family this season, I suspect it's something familial, and not unique to her (what about Jason?). That would wrap up the last big mystery from the first season.

All that said, I thought the episode was pretty awesome.

Of note, I haven't read the books but my girlfriend has, and she says that the Sam's bio family story isn't in the books at all, and the same is true for several of the small sub-plots throughout the TV series. Major plots are pushed in other directions as well, sometimes significantly different from the books. Alan Ball clearly has a strong hand in the show.

I think there's just a little too many characters now. Things were more focused last season and now it's all too sprawling.

Methinks, it is quite needed for extra characters in this scond season, cause things are getting a iffy.

Some main characters may not survive to what is coming. Just saying..

I've stopped following the show. There's just too many stories and subplots going on. I was excited by its return last month, but found that things were much more complex.

I'm afraid that it's going down Lost's way, so i'd rather not waste my time.
