There's a humanoid I thought most people had completely ignored!
I've been working on a campaign concept where the Mercane are the central villains.
Basically, the heroes are forced to work for the Mercane until they're powerful enough to break free from them ...
My Campaign Web site said:
The mercane are traders by nature and they have found that magic is the commodity that people pay a premium for. Unfortunately for the mercane, magic -- mostly in the form of weapons, arcane storage and equipment -- is closely guarded by the dragons both good and evil. Good dragons carefully select who they distribute magic to in an effort to protect intraplanar society. Likewise, evil dragons are keen on giving magic to those who can help them secure even more power. This give and take has lead to an elevated status of dragons among the intelligent creatures of the planes. As such, it's not uncommon for humanoids in need to come hat-in-hand to a local dragon, begging for assistance.
As the campaign opens, you'll find out more about your role with the Mercane. In short, the Mercane will be using you to extract the items they need from across the planes. The mercane use you to do their dirty work against the "magic-hording dragons." .
