Plus he's the face of a different zany comedy film franchise of the same era.

Part of what got me thinking about it is they were both in a one of those scary movies together (I can't remember if it was three or four at this point)

The rationale was he actually very good in things like Hot Shots and even in those terrible Scary Movies, he and Neilson both stood out. And also Neeson just seems like such a bad choice (especially judging by the clip). He seems like he could be believable as Neilson's son and has the comedic timing to make it work. I am sure there are better people who can do the straight man thing in a comedy (Bill Hader leaps to mind, but he might be too goofy). I could be wrong, maybe Neeson will be great (I do like him in action movies and dramatic roles).
I think those movies aged like milk. Though, I dont have such undying love of the 90's as some. As for straight man, Liam has shown it time and again working with MacFarlane.

Admittedly I have not seen A Million Ways to Die in the West

I don't know I thought Hot Shots was still pretty funny but I haven't seen it in ages. The scary movie films are what they are lol

The Hot Shots movies still hold up. I wouldn't port Sheen over from them, though - what he brings to the part isn't the same as what Nielson does.

Liam Neeson?

Okay, I find the parallel (Leslie Nielsen was mostly a dramatic actor before Airplane!) kind of awesome.
I think that’s a big part of why Leslie Nielsen’s track record with this style of comedy was so vey good. He had the drama/action chops already, and each time he took one of these comedic roles, the writers & directors knew for a fact he could lean into the stylistic norms of his past. And the audience, knowing him in that past capacity, would have bought into that, consciously or unconsciously.

The only real question was whether he could pull off the comedic subversion, and he answered that question like a master.

Liam is a good choice on both of these aspects. There’s no question about his dramatic/action movie past. And he’s shown he has some comedic timing guesting on SNL & in past comedic movies.
