Full Moon Storyteller
Human
Halfling
Goliath
Elf
Dwarf
Gnome
Goblin
Hobgoblin
Bugbear
Dragonborn

As those are the ten races in my world right now

Keeping in mind that "my" 2024 PHB would be wildly different from the direction WotC is taking it:

Full species:
human
elf
dwarf
halfling
orc

Species Templates:
mixed parentage (half)
divine touched
fiend touched
wild touched
fey touched

In my PHB, you would get to choose from species traits at character levels (including level 1) similar to how you get feats (but not as a replacement for feats). The "touched" templates would get unique options for those traits, and the mixed heritage template would let you choose from both the base species and the one you're mixed with.

5 humanoid-only species.
1. Humans (default/baseline; also Medium, no swapping)
2. Dwarves (Medium/short, wide)
3. Elves (Medium/tall, skinny)
4. Halflings (hobbits, not kender. Small Race)
5. Ogres (a little smarter and slenderer than depicted as a Monster; Large Race)

5 humanoid-mix species; no magical mixes (e.g. No Dragonborn)
6. Cat-folk (Kzin/Tabaxi/Lion-folk/...; generally Medium; no were-felids)
7. Dog-folk (Jackal/Wolf/...; generally Medium; no were-canids)
8. Reptile-folk (Lizard/Snake/...; generally non-Medium)
9. Bird-folk (Raven/Owl/"bird"/...; generally Small)
10. Bear-folk (Generally Large)

No interbreeding, so no "half-X/half-Y" entries. However, All Species/Ancestries have an attached feat tree/advancement scheme, providing the internal variants. And also providing a hook for the "magical/planar/..." mixin.

Basic Mixins:
A. Celestial, or Light/Vitality/Positive Element
B. Fiend, or Dark/Void/Negative Element
C. Fire/Air/Earth/Water Element
D. Psychopomp/Ghost
E. Terrain-bound (Forest/Desert/Mountain/Arctic/...)

EDIT: swapping in other races instead of these could work, it's more about filling the design space. The halflings could just as easily be Kobolds or Goblins. Ogres could be thought of as "Monster" race, instead of a "Large" race, but that would probably fit better in the 2nd grouping. Regardless, a general "Playable Species Compendium" would be a natural expansion.
