Yep, surviving by a hair is a great memory!

Gotta say though, my current DM (actually getting to play occasionally as opposed to DM!)
LOVES monsters with the bad things happen when they die rider. I'm starting to hate them, and feel pretty bad for the melee people in the group!
There was a one round delay in this case, but I was grappled and prone and unable to get far enough away.

Well, pardon me mister hoity toity with your fancy "paper" bags and septic tanks! You know what we had? Dirt! An' it wasn't even good dirt! It was the stuff everybody else rejected! But dagnabbit we ate that dirt and we loved it! Made real men out of us, put hair on our chests!

The womenfolk didn't always like that last part, but they did it anyway. You know why? Because we knew sometimes you just took one for the team. Now get off my lawn.
Paper bags?!?

LUXURY!

Bah! Back in my day your PC fell over dead if there was a strong breeze! They were exhausted because they had to walk uphill to the dungeon! Both ways!
Of course you walk uphill both ways. It's a hill! You have to go up it on the way there AND on the way back. That's how hills work!

I'm just being silly. :p

I have to say I agree. I think when it’s telegraphed and factored into the tactics it can work ok but coming out of no-where it can kind of feel like a slap in the mouth.

We had an example recently of an ooze dosing us in acid if it was hit. But the individual damage was small so acted as it’s own warning and we had to adapt our tactics. That way it’s more fun. Had it exploded on death in an ooze-ball blast it would have been annoying.

My current DM really loves "Deathsplosions". Especially on 4e Minions. Ugh.

By the way, this is another example of why I love aid as it is in 5e. The playtest version that just gives temp hps is really piss poor, in my opinion.
