I can't seem to find the rules for Starting Gold for characters that are beginning a campaign at 2nd level or higher. Is this information missing from the PHB? Thanks!

Best I can tell, it is (missing, that is).

But with the assumption of no required magic items, starting with more gold isn't strictly necessary. Just because you're 5th level doesn't necessarily mean you're swimming in wealth. If you find that unlikely, you can have players come up with their own reasons as to why they've fallen on hard times (or just give them more starting gold, of course).

It is not really needed since I assume the default assumption is that their adventuring like begins when they become a PC. I expect the DMG will have an optional rules/guideline for handling this.

I would have them tell me their characters story and then make a decision based on it and how much gold you want your players to have.

Lets say we were starting at 3rd level and the Fighter said that he had been an low-level officer in the army. Then you could give him 1-6 months worth of pay on top of starting gold (1 month if you want them to have a low amount, 3 months for an intermediate amount or 6 months if you want them to feel rich).

I personally would give them 1-3 months pay on top of the starting gold depending on the character. So if he was a frugal spendthrift who spent all his off time in the barracks I would give him 3 months, if he was a skirt chaser who went to bars all the time, then 1 month (or maybe even no extra money).

Contrary to what people are saying, if you are using pre-written adventures, including those by WotC, there will be an expectation of certain levels of magic items and so on, even if it's only from previous adventures in the series, so giving them starting equipment is likely to be... unhealthy... for them.

However, this is DMG information, therefore will not be around until very late this year.

(1) Needs citation.

Joking notation aside, what's your source on this? As of yet, we only have a single stand-alone adventure and the first part of a two-part adventure to use as a guideline. Unless I'm missing something, I can't help but think this is a straight-up assumption.

We can expect the worst, perhaps, but we shouldn't pass it off as gospel.

The Encounters framework (or whatever it's called) has pretty clear guidelines on how many items you get and so on, and is designed to be used with WotC adventures (AFAIK).

We also know, from Mearls, that the DMG has specific rules for adjusting encounters based on whether the PCs have magic items and/or how many. It's unclear what those rules are, exactly, or how they work, though. So there is certainly some thinking there. So if adventures coming out before the DMG, aimed for levels above 1, do not contain advice on that, they are making some kind of assumption here.

I should point out that "passing it off as gospel" applies to almost every post in this thread, too! :)
