[SPOILERS] Andromeda TV General Thread

Anyone out there watch Andromeda?

I just got into recently. I have been downloading episodes from the internet and have been hooked.

I've been watching episodes in chronological order and have made my way up to Season 3 Episode 2. In the process of downloading Episode 3.

I realize that Andromeda is not the best show out there, and has much cheeseyness to it, but damn it, I can't help but love the show. I think it has to do with how each character has their own little nuances and starting from Season 1 Episode 1, you can really see how characters develop. Although, some, if not many episodes themselves were blah, I just enjoy seeing the characters deal with one another.

I've heard rumors though that Season 3 will no longer have story arcs. Instead, each episode is suppossed to be stand-alone, in order for new viewers to be able to jump right in to the series. I've always hated that approach to TV shows. I love seeing characters head towards a climactic goal throughout a season and always referring to events and characters that happened in previous episodes. Now I'm afraid that each episode will be so stand-alone that the sense of continuity will be lost. Give me my damn story arcs! I'll still be watching Season 3 though.

Anyways, who else watchs Andromeda?

the scheduling is so out of whach that I can't keep up with it ...

I liked the first season, and really really liked the second season ... what I didn't like was the new intro, it went from kinda cool and Bab5-ish (season one) to Hercules in space (season 2+)

... I don't remember where I left off watching, but haven't had time for it.

As a general policy, we refrain from discussing illegal activities on these boards. That includes copyright infringement. Talk about the eps all you like, but unless you got them legally, we'd rather you not talk about it here. It sets a bad precedent, and makes the boards in general look shabby.

Yes, I watched Andromeda, for the first two seasons. After that, there was a bit of a change - the former head writer was released due to "creative differences". Mr. Sorbo and the people at Tribune Entertainment didn't want a show that you couldn't jump into mid stream. They wanted it more "accessible" ot the casual viewer.

The end result being that, IMHO, the show lost most of it's depth. The long-term plotlines were pretty much abandoned. Much of the conflict between characters was expunged. The characters are the same, but they aren't developing. The quips and banter are there, but they've lost most of their soul, because there's not much actual story. So, I stopped watching.

So that being the case, what happened to the whole magog-worldship? Will there still be talk of expanding the Commonwealth?

In Episode 2, the Commonwealth seemed to be pretty much re-established. Also in regards to Episode 2, one of the poorer episodes I have seen to date.

Do you believe the characters will no longer be expanded on and that side-stories for the characters will be dropped?

One of the things that hooked me on Andromeda was the feel of continuity and how things they did affected the entire universe around them. Now I am afraid it may end up being a show that you can watch out of chronilogical order and not worry about missing anything. I dislike those types of show.

Yup. I am grateful that one of the local TV stations in Hawaii have the foresight to purchase airtime to show Andromeda every late Saturday night. Unfortunately, they did not act quickly so I missed the first season, but was able to watch second season and currently halfway through the third season.

I am considering purchasing the first season of Andromeda via DVDs (available now; order from www.towerrecords.com).

At least I managed to see some of former DS9 producer Robert Hewitt Wolfe's major contribution (the guy managed to develop this show with scrambled notes left by the late Gene Roddenberry) before he left during the middle of 2nd season, where they started to implement stand-alone episodes.

So far the "post-Wolfe's" stories are tolerable. And lately since the formal establishment of the new System Commonwealth, they're replacing those bland AI drones with flesh-and-blood crew. Now if they only introduce a Lancer Corps member to the main character lineup.

Go to the first post you made in the thread. Hit the "Edit" button. Add, "[Spoilers]" to the title of the thread, 'casue some of this will qualify...

I have not wached all of Season 3. From what I saw, the whole Magog thing has been abandoned. Dylan and crew have decided that the 50 world Commonwealth will have to handle it. There is no further empire building on Dylan's part. He goes off to do other stuff.

From what I have seen, any "side sotries" will be short, and have little effect upon the series as a whole. The goal is to make Andromeda "episodic". Mostly stand-alone episodes that don't refer to one another.

Without reference to past events, it's difficult to do character growth. Not impossible, but difficult.

Now I am afraid it may end up being a show that you can watch out of chronilogical order and not worry about missing anything. I dislike those types of show.

Sorry, but that is indeed pretty much what you'll be getting in season 3. Sorbo and Tribune were concerned that the series viewership would cease to grow if they kept up with the long, deep and involved plotlines. They were probably right. But in the process of making it more accessible to casual viewers, they took out the show's greatest strengths, IMHO.

Does anyone know if they plan to have Andromeda go back to having story "arcs"?

I think I may have misinterpreted my definition of "stand-alone-episodes". I know people have already mentioned their definitions of what this means to them, but can someone give examples as to what this actual means for Andromeda?

Do "stand-alone-episodes" mean that whatever happens in that episode will most likely have little or no impact on what happens on the rest of the show? Will it matter if "stand-alone-episodes" are watched in chronological order?

Does "story arc" refer to say a particular overall goal that the characters are trying to accomplish (sucha as going up against the main bad guy in Buffy for that particular story) or does "story arc" refer to stories that are somehow linked to one another (stories that are "random" in nature, but characters and places from previous stories appear, giving some sense of continuity and a larger universe as a whole)?

On a side note, I was going to post on the "official" boards on the Andromeda TV site, but was very happy to find this forum in our little EN World.

Didn't they do a story arc with Rev Brem, when he undergo a startling transformation since he departed Andromeda?

They also did an interesting story with Radhe, Dylan's best friend turned traitor.

Actually, the latest episode seemed to involve an overall story arc. It seems that Trance's people, who are apparently manipulating events, have decided that the new Commonwealth will simply not be enough to handle the Magog ship. So, they've thrown their support to the Pyrians, and are goading them into conquest. I just caught it by accident, but it is interesting me once more.
