Slashing and bludgeoning weapon

First Post
Hi all,

Just wondering if there is any melee weapons that cause slashing AND bludgeoning damage, or even slashing OR bludgeoning damage. I know there are magical enhancements to help with this, but I was looking for a standard (or exotic weapon) weapon capable of causing both types of damage.

Thanks - T

Kawanaga and Kusari-Gama.

Both are in Oriental Adventures, and the Kusari-Gama is in the Dungeon Master's Guide as well, as an example of an Asian weapon. Though the DMG version is a simplified version and seems to only be useable as a slashing weapon. The OA version describes use of the weighted end of the chain as a bludgeoning weapon, and is reflected in the stats.

Both are Exotic weapons. They do slashing or bludgeoning with each attack, not slashing and bludgeoning at the same time.

There's also the Gyrspike, a ridiculous combination longsword+flail exotic weapon found in Sword & Fist and the Arms & Equipment Guide. Like the aforementioned weapons, it does either damage type, depending on which end is used, not both damage types at once. And as far as realism goes, it would be impossible not to nail yourself in the 'nads when using the Gyrspike if it were a real weapon, which it thankfully is not.

Monks spade, in Secrets of Sarlona. It's an exotic double weapon with a sharpened blade at one end and a weight at the other. Also can be used in a flurry of blows. Looks reasonably believable IMO.

Thank you both.

I'm looking for an undead hunter character, to have a weapon that is fully effective against skeletons and zombies. ;)

There's also the Gyrspike...

Yay, Gyrspike!

I put together an intelligent Gyrspike at one point - Silver Axiomatic Holy LG intelligent longsword attached to a Cold Iron Anarchic Unholy CE intelligent flail. The shiny, rigid blade represented everything a paladin holds dear, while the dark, sinuous spiked ball was the opposite.

Never actually got a chance to throw it at the players, but Gyrspikes rock! :D

The whole "nail yourself in the 'nads" thing is a small price to pay for the Awesome.

I haven't DMed in a while- are zombies resistant to bludgeoning damage?

If not, just get a good Bludgeoning weapon- Morningstar, Flail...Maul!

Were one of my players to ask for such a weapon, I'd stat something like a woodsplitting maul. Two-handed, use the damage base of either a warhammer or a battleaxe (user's choice each round).

Of course that reply would fit better in a different forum, I suppose, since it's a house rule. I hope it's not taken amiss.

Talk to your DM. Show him a picture of a battle axe or a late period mace (the ones that look like a Plus Sign at the end of a stick) and let him decide if the core rules are in error or not.

Writers of Dungeons and Dragons are not fighters.

Katanas, longswords, rapiers, etc, etc, are ALL piercing and slashing (they all have thrusting tips and blades). Some fighters I know still argue that broadswords and two handed swords are bludgeoning weapons (though I don't agree) since they do tissue damage similar to that done by late period maces (these swords were not generally sharpened).

Battleaxes are bludgeoning and slashing.

Lucern hammers are piercing, bludgeoning.

Spiked maces are piercing and bludgeoning.

Some consider late period maces as slashing and bludgeoning (though I don't agree).

Spears (a staff with a thrusting tip) are piercing and bludgeoning.

This list is quite long....

There are still a few weapons that do one form of damage (such as a staff or mace that does bludgeoning only).

As an SCA fighter who plays D&D with a group of other SCA fighters, we have revamped many of the weaponry on the charts to match the actual use of the weapons, and some of the armor (including the odd confusion with shield usage the writers have...hehe).

I'm pretty sure you're in house rules or exotic territory no matter what.

One option that comes to mind, though, is the old Aztec/Maian weapons (referenced in the Savage Tide AP, actually) that were two-handed clubs studded all over with razor-sharp chunks of obsidian.

I'm pretty sure there were rules for them in Dark Sun. Whether my memory is failing me there or not, I think something along those lines would make a lot of sense for a dedicated hunter of the dead. Along with Ghost Touch, of course. :)
