Hi all,

When it comes to maps in 5e adventures, Storm King's Thunder is a first in that not all of the maps were done by Mike Schley and/or Jared Blando. Those two guys are both great because they sell hi-res versions of their maps that you can download and print out or whatever. SKT, however, has a bunch of maps by some other people, including Jason Engle, who does not sell digital versions of his maps.

When I spoke to Chris Perkins about this recently, he basically said that if you want all of SKT's maps, you have to go through roll20 or Fantasy Grounds. Does anyone know if you can extract image files from either of those programs? Can I download the maps from them in order to print them out to use at the table? Or would I be forced to display them on-screen in the program itself? If it's the latter, then I would be rather disappointed, as I have no real need to use those programs. I just want copies of the maps I can print off to use at the table.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Is the main region map available at least?

Is the main region map available at least?
Yes. It was released for free as part of this year's Extra Life campaign (here).

You can purchase Schley's contributions, Bryn Shander and the Dripping Caves (which has actually been reused from a 4e product), as well as Blando's Uthgardt burial mound maps (and the Harper teleportation network illustration).

What you can't purchase are the maps of Goldenfields, Triboar, Everlund, and Nightstone; the map of Zephyros' tower; any of the ship deck maps (airship, Krigvind, Grand Dame, Morkoth); or any of the giant / dragon / oracle lair maps (Eye of the All-Father, Ironslag, Maelstrom, Deadstone Cleft, Grudd Haug, Lyn Armaal, Svardborg, and Iymrith's lair).

I noticed that they seem to have re-used a lot of things, as well as relying on telling people to reference the DMG for a lot of stuff which I don't recall being done in other campaign books. I wonder if that has something to do with it? The maps being reused and therefore there are issues with licensing/rights?

As far as I can tell, only Schley's maps were reused. Everything else is new. I think it's more just that Engle doesn't want to sell his for some unspecified reason.

The maps includes with teh VTTs are not high resolution. In general they are they same as the book/print version. I always figured that whatever size they are in the book they are then probably 300 dpi. So if it's full width of one page, about 2400 pixels. Which is enough for many purposes, but not for printing at a larger scale.

As for why an artist wouldn't sell them, well, maybe they don't have a storefront and think it would cost too much to set one up. Maybe they are just weird, some artists are :)
