D&D 5E Please help me understand Dnd Beyond "Maps"

Thanks this helps.
Doing any sort of math on the number of pixels will only work for images of a particular resolution—a higher resolution image will have a lot more pixels per square than a lower resolution one.
I know next nothing when it comes to image types, pixels and resolution, but this works similar to eyeballing it.
Probably. I've never experience that particular issue with the fog of war not working, but I have occasionally had situations where my view (the DM's view) somehow lost synch with Maps so I couldn't see that a player was moving a token. Reloading has always fixed this for me.
It was the first time we played with maps, so I just shut it off and ran the rest of the game TotM deciding keeping the game moving was more important. I'll try reloading next time and see if that works.

Almost all of the maps I've uploaded already had a grid, so I just adjusted the Maps grid to match that. On the rare occasions that I've used a map without a grid, I just eyeballed it to get roughly the right scale.
I'm confused. I too have only used maps with grids. I just tried to upload a map with no grid, I scaled it using the token re-size feature and it did scale the tokens pretty accurately but didn't overlay a grid. Looking at your post #7 where you're showing how to upload the map, it doesn't appear to have a grid; can you just not see it? In post 10 the map shows a grid? Did you do something to overlay a grid?

To the best of my knowledge there isn't currently a way to get Maps to add a grid to a map that doesn't already have one. The Red Dragon Lair map comes with a grid, but it consists of thin grey lines that vanish when the map is shrunk to the size shown in that first post. I didn't add a grid.

We tend to treat any grid as a guideline in play, so characters sometimes end up standing (or prone) on more than one square. We use the Maps ruler to determine distance for the purposes of movement and targeting so gridless maps haven't been a problem for us.

Yeah, I'm realizing that. Seems like a pretty big oversight IMO as I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to add.

Whether it's been electronic or on a battle mat, we use it as a guide too. I just want to get it close and have had varying success. Because we don't play every week, every time I use it (which I haven't had too much experience) I have to remember things and then learn new stuff.

This is from link I posted earlier: D&D Beyond Maps: How to Start Playing Today; under the Uploading and Scaling Maps section. I did not know this and makes more sense now.

"In the middle of the map preview, you’ll see a white circle surrounded by dotted lines, three smaller circles, and a red arrow. The larger circle represents a Medium-sized token, the lines represent grid lines, and the smaller circles represent the corners of a grid square. You want to align these dotted lines and corner markers with the grid of your map if it has one or adjust the scale of your token to suit the map if it doesn’t have a grid."
