D&D (2024) Reworked…revised…redone….but

In this video:

Jeremy Crawford goes out of his way to say how much has changed for the coming whatchamacallit. A lot of new! different! better!

In fact he goes so far as to imply that there is as much change as there has ever been from one core to another. (Reworking I think is the exact term he uses). But now that it’s backwards compatible, it’s not a new”edition”. New and better and you should really use it, but not an edition change. Unless you really want to use some of the old stuff. Then you can.

Yes, it is quite clear: the books are as much a rework a the 2014 books were drom 2008, but the rules are 100% interoperable with the 2014 rules, unlike 2014 with 2008.

So, 5E books are still useavle, you can show up at a 2024 rules session woth an old PC sheet from 201u and it will just work...but the actual text of the PHB has been rewritten entirely.

It is a new edition the way publishing means normally, not rhe way TSR and WotC have used it in the past.

yes, because there is some new stuff in the 2024 books that 2014 did not anticipate, a real failure on WotC’s part back then
Cute. :p

Though Crawford has also said thst would work, as long as the 2024 PHB was around and the DM let's the '24 PC use their Weapon Masteries and such.
I thought the official line was "Don't do it, because it will cause combat to 'grind'"?

Ginny Di interviewing Crawford is interesting, because she was utilizing the opportunity to address her own hesitations about 2024. She has her own 2014 content that she doesnt want obsoleted. How compatible is compatible?

My take away is, Di was able to address her own hesitations. She says she is excited moving forward to 2024. She also affirms that it is ok if others want to take a wait-and-see approach.

Something her video was able to make clear is, the debate about whether to call 2024 a new edition or not is because:
• On the one hand, there are significant reworkings of the 2014 procedures.
• On the other hand, all of these 2024 reworkings strive to keep 2014 operational.

Ultimately, she feels the update is significant enough to warrant a new edition ("Dungeons & Dragons 6"). But she views the viability of 2014 content within 2024 as legitimate and practicable.

There is also clarity about how to keep 2014 content operational. All 2014 adventures are operational as-is. For characters, ideally use the 2024 updates wherever there is one. She recommends a kind of session zero, where everyone translates their character into the 2024 rules. Crawford recommends rebuilding it level by level. Nevertheless, it is possible for a character to use 2014 rules only, while everyone else is using 2024.
