racism against black elves (non drow)

But then, DROW! Run for the hills!

Yeah, right. Heroes shouldn't run away from wimps.

I think the typical farmer would be scared, however, and try to summon the militia. They probably don't know the "finer points" of drow appearance (eg jet black skin and oddly-colored eyes). Even a farmer might notice that their hair isn't white.

They are dark grey, close to black in skin. As to their hair It's dark as well. There are differences that are blatently obvious, but like you guys have said black elves = shoot on site, look through leftovers for answers.

to the avg farmer who hasn't encountered a goblin much less a drow...

they would be elves.

the problem is the towns or cities where people have travelled and have stories about drow that would give the PCs trouble.

drow even in the FR are not known by everyone. they are supposed to be scarce on the surface.

Yeah, cause its not like Drizzt scared the piss out of some farmer/peasent types when he was first on the surface...

Drow are the boogey-men of the Realms.

My group is from a campaign world where surface elves are dark, almost black, and underdark elves are white from lack of pigment (like deep sea fish).
They will be going to forgotten realms soon, and I was wondering what kind of challenges they might face trying to fit into the realms. They are obviously good, and one even radiates it, but they do appear dark skinned which will mean they will be mistaken for drow, even though they do not look exactly drowish.

The problem that I am seeing with everyone's logic is, if these "Drow" are pale white, and ALWAYS have been, then the stereotypes of Drow would be of pale white elves, not black ones.

Or did you mean that on your current "world" (whatever you want to call it) drow are pale white... but that your party is going to Travel to the Forgotten Realms, where drow are black? In that case, I'd agree that your "black" surface-elves would be mistaken for drow (hey, even if your average peasant has seen a drow, they've probably heard stories.) In fact, since the average person HASN'T seen a drow, I would think that they'd be More likely to mistake your black elf for a drow, because they wouldn't be aware of the subtle differences between the two (whereas an expereinced mage or adventurer has a good chance of noticing the differences.)

An elf with a Nubian skin tone will be in a spot of difficulty in the forgotton realms. I'll echo the pro arrows, cure potions and disguising magic.

On this tangent, anybody else REALLY annoyed when artists make drow brown skinned?

And purple-ish, and blue-ish or so shiny they appear white/silver...

What about blue skinned drow? I personally think the dark blue/purple skinned drow in art aren't so bad, it would be hard to do ebony black drow and make them look all that good.

I like 'em like that. Black with just enough specular highlights and not so shiny they look like they just oiled up for some kind of hardbody contest.
