Q: Armor of dragon skin

MURRDOX: I know if I allowed that in my group, next thing I know I'd have a character trying to make a cloak out of Lich skin, and expecting himself to be resistant to negative energy.

Lich skin wouldn't exactly peel off in sheets, it'd come off in chunks if at all, and wouldn't sew well. So if your gonna try to be hostile, try to make an analogy that makes sense.

It's his game to run the way he see's fit, and who's to say that he does't have a mature group. Not everyone has to put up w/ players tryin' to "bleed" every drop out of their DM's good faith.

I see no problem w/ giving a small resistance to Dragon Scale armor. It adds some flavor to a fairly bland option to armor material in the game, and if someone can take out a dragon 4 sizes larger than them, then 5-10 energy resistance is gonna have to be EARNED. And they'll have to keep earning it even after they have the armor, cause, if they run into another dragon of that type, they'll be dealin' w/ a VERY pissed-off dragon, that just might be older than the last one.

Thats my two copper pieces.

Okay, the Lich skin was a joke, kay?

I don't have problem with what any DM wants to do, and if you want to house rule it that dragon hide gives you resistances, then do whatever you think is best... I'm not being hostile here, I'm just pointing out the same thing that Caliban did - which is that dragon hide doesn't have any magical properties.

How about Rust-Monster armor? ;)

That's my point of view too, but I don't know what he have to pay for the forging / making of this armor. They killed the dragon, specially the shadow dragon without help and he earned it. But what is the price of the armorsmith??

I wouldn't give him an immunity to energy drain, but he can have a resistance. What do you mean with 5 -1 0? 5 - 10 level per day? or something else?

Whats scary is that they printed that in Quin. Rogue *shudders*

I know, I was just givin' ya a hard time.

But about what you were sayin' about munchkins usin' any and every kind of hide to get bonuses, u should REALLY take a look at Quin. Rogue, it's quite sad that someone could make something that unbalanced and print it.

A prime example: Gorgon Hide Armor, it stomps the piss outta a Mithral Shirt, for tad bit more gold (don't remember exact price, I think it's around 1800gp). So I can see where your comin' from to an extent, cause there are ppl out there like that. Just so happens that some of em' are 3rd party publishers:(

For those of you are a little underwhelmed by the SRD rules for dragonscale armor, there is an alternative in Quintessential Fighter that costs around 3000 more gp than even full plate.

For those of you who want to see a more powerful alternative to steel in a world of umber hulks, and tanar'i, and dragons, and the tarrasque, it provides a little more defensive power than +2 adamantine or mithral plate. Or at least, it does if you enchant it, which you should be doing if you are at 14th level. :)

actually as per that passage, depending on the size category of the dragon you could make anything from hide up to full plate.

My mistake. I should've gone back and read that passage.

Whoops. Thanks for correcting me :)

I would not give a resistance to energy drain. Thats way to powerful.

I would give a +5 to Hide tho as the leather is "shadowy"

I think it fits with the idea of Dragon skin giving some non-magical bonus to armor made from it.

I would go with a strate resistance of 5(element) for the different colors.

For the Cormatics I would give a 5% chance that Ray spells are deflected or resistance of 5 in one of the dragons immunites.

Make a judement on what the Dragon skin should give but keep it low no more thatn +5 or so. Resistence 10 is too much. the 5 will stop nost non magical things (Alchemical Fire, Flask of Acid etc) But wount stop most magical effects.

I would make the cost to make the same as Master work then a fixed gp cost like Mithurl and Adamatium have. Maybe just use the Mithural costs for each Armor type (Light, Medium, Heavy)

Just some ideas.

I totally forgot about the Shadow Dragon being immune to Energy Drain, when I said "resistance of 5-10" I ment for conventional types of energy (fire, cold, acid, electricity, etc).

Since the character is gonna use Shadow Dragon scales/hide, give him/her a +4 to Fort. Saves vs. Energy Drain, or sumthing like that, Maybe +4 bonus for Heavy Armors, +3 for Medium Armors, and +2 for Light Armors.

But I don't think that mixed dragon hides sould be made into the same suit of armor AND confer any type of bonus, simply for balance sake.
