Praying Mantis killing hummingbird

Mantids rock my entomology world. When I was in the second grade, I had one that I kept for fighting other insects during recess. We'd bet our lunch money. I was undefeated until some other kid brought a tarantula. My over confidence was my undoing that day.

You know what's really sad about all this? A giant praying mantis is one of the lamer vermin in D&D. Oddly, they gave it an 8 Dex, which seems pretty damned odd to me since supposed to be a fast, stealthy creature. Comparing it to another CR 3 creature like a large giant scorpion is very disappointing.

there aren't very many instances of insects attacking and killing higher species. I guess aside from spiders and scorpions killing people
Well, technically speaking, IIRC scorpions and spiders are arachnids rather than insects. Though I don't know if you even want to get technical, of course. :)
