They're obviously going for the "remix" approach rather than a direct continuation from Faction War.

A bit annoying for those of us that actually find the post-Faction War setup compelling, but on the whole, probably far easier for newcomers to the setting if/when they delve into the older material.
Someone made the good point earlier this week that the design ethos of 5e is no inter-dependency of supplements. Any new book can be used with just itself and the core three. So there's just no way they'd offer up a new setting book that required extensive recapping of a 25 year old metaplot to make sense of.

If it's like the Guide to Ravenloft then there's going to be little nods to the old material aplenty, but more as flavor and background so the book doesn't become useless if you don't understand them. Definitely not a sequel, not quite a full reboot either, as you say it's more of a remix.

Re-reading the original Planescape stuff right now, these seem like eminently sensible changes. The Hands of Havoc Come across as a bit to try hard on the nose, but it’s 2023 WoTC. To each their own.

So, there's some really weird continuity stuff happening here (surprise surprise)...

The factols listed on that page are all from the Planescape setting pre-Faction War. Notably, the factol of the Fated is still Duke Rowan Darkwood (who played a pivotal role and was ousted in the old FW adventure) & the factol of the Fraternity of Order is still Hashkar (who died in the old FW adventure).

However, the presence of the Mind's Eye faction is a post-Faction War development (mentioned in the epilogue of the FW adventure).

So there's conflicting continuity lore without any explanation (yet) for what's going on.
It's a reboot, no different in concept (though I very much hope better in execution) than VRGtR.

Hands of Havoc appear from other previews to actually have a philosophy, where the Revolutionary League was all “tear it down” the Wreckers are “tear it down and build something better”

Even the Harmoium
We got Planes, Factions, Sigil, Gods, Alignment, Gate Towns...dare I get excited?!

I just realized that Erin remaining the Factol of the Sensates confirms that the Celtic Gods are still around somewhere. Given that the Sensates are Aborea based, maybe she convinced them to move to Aborea?
