Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

A couple of the things on that list seem spurious. The 2016 Ghostbusters movie had nothing to do with the rest of the series
Whether or not you were one of those people, there were definitely people who -- well in advance of the movie being seen by anyone -- were openly review bombing it because it was all women.

Look at any Facebook Ghostbusters group and the moment the 2016 movie is mentioned, you get instant blatant misogyny from tons of community members.

Yeah 2016 Ghostbusters had a whole massive hate campaign out for it well before it came out, and then it finally came out and it... was fine? Generally okay? Nothing spectacular outside of a legendary performance by Kate McKinnon?

I mean between "Women Ghostbusters??!?!" and "Laura Linney's purple hair?!?!???" I think both films had a pretty significant review bombing campaign, in spite of whatever legitimate criticism one could have of them.

FWIW, I consider 2016 Ghostbusters to be one the most disappointing reboots/remakes released over the course of my life. But any internet discussion about the (IMNSO) very legitimate thematic and cinematic shortcomings inevitably gets sidetracked by arguments about sexism before much real discourse happens. The pre-release hate campaign was, unfortunately, extremely effective.

I didn't even realize that I held this opinion until Jim Pinto called my attention to it over on Facebook. Underrated: World of Synnibarr. Ok. Hear me out. The rules in World of Synnibarr run the gamut from "meh" to "completely unhinged" but, conceptually, the game's setting is a lot more compelling and well put together than other products that have covered the same ground (the two examples that immediately leapt to mind were Metamorphosis Alpha and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks). The world ship concept? The way sci-fi is meshed with traditional fantasy? Flying bears with laser beam eyes? Hell, yeah! Give it to me!

When I was a teenager my brother and I encountered it at a couple of local conventions and then joined Raven's home game for a while. As far as gonzo games go it was a lot of fun.

Scorsese is, without a doubt, a great director, but his reputation has certainly overrated some of his films.
Had to come back to this one because yeah…just yeah.

Killers of the Flower Moon and The Irishman were two of the dullest, most obnoxiously long movies I’ve watched in awhile. But who’s going to tell Scorsese that he needs to edit his movie? To rein in some of the other excess? At this point, no one.

Then there’s The Departed - a completely average movie that became the darling of the Academy Awards that year.

People made a huge deal about Jack Nicholson in Departed and… I don’t get it. The best part of that movie is Marky Marks weird haircut because he was between growing it out. :ROFLMAO:

It’s a good movie but far from the best of that year or Scorsese’s career. But AMPAS likes to recognize icons that have been overlooked, so it was a good excuse to get Marty his Oscar. Not to mention all the heavy hitters in the cast out there lobbying for it.

Kinda like Dicaprio for The Revenant, a fair to good movie in which he excelled at chewing the scenery.
