[OT] Local or Urban Legends

Yeah! Mrs Leeds' 13th born child is my favorite urban legend. I am from S. Jersey and have always loved the story of him even though it scared the dickens out of me as a child.

I want the details! As a native South Dakotan, my knowledge of the Jersey Devil is notably slim! Fill me in! What's his (in RPG terms) backstory!?!

Springfield, Louisiana. It's about a twenty minute drive from where I live. There is a cemetary in Springfield that has a ... unique ... tale surrounding it.

On August 20, 1983, there was a vehicle accident that claimed the life of a sixteen-year-old boy. It was a hit-and-run, and there were no witnesses to the crime. The victim was buried, and a headstone was placed on his grave. After the funeral, the boy's mother stayed for an hour at the site, and then left to go the store across the street.

Then, within the space of tje ten minutes for which the mother was gone, something was carved on the tombstone's blank back side. It was a sketch of the accident scene. It listed the names of the people involved. It listed the licence plate number of the vehicle. The detail of the carving was such that it was said that it would normally take a week's work to create.

The tombstone still stands there. I have not personally seen it, though I do want to drop by one day to see it. This story was featured on "Unsolved Mysteries". Due to the popularity of the story, the cemetary took to closing its gates to the general public to dissuade traffic from flocking to the grave.

Upon being contacted and informed of the scene on the tombstone, the driver of the vehicle confessed to the crime.

Here is a (poor) picture that I found on the Internet of the tombstone.

*bump!*

Also, anybody not from the USA lurking around here? I'd really like to hear about the local legends of places a little further afield...

In Oz, we have the bunyip.

Now seeing as I'm not terribly ofay with bush legend, I figured I'd just post a link here

I'm sure there are other (much better) resources for bunyip legends.

another interesting ghost story (from the Australian Urban Legends Research Site) is here

The Jersey Devil was born to Mrs Leeds' of South Jersey. The actual place of his birth is debated but one of the more popular is Leeds Point, NJ. (Only 10 minutes from where I grew up). Anyway Mrs Leeds' damned her 13th child to the devil and when she gave birth it was not a normal baby. It had wings, donkey (or horse) legs, a horse face, and clawed arms. It flew out through the chimney and is known to hunt the area around its birth place. All farm animals are known to be prey to the Jersey Devil and one always knows if he has been there during the night because they will find hooved footprints in the ground. What else? He also to tortured citizens on the coasts of Penn. Maryland NY and Conn. during this infamous week of 1909. There were like 100s of sightings that week.
There are other versions of how the Jersey Devil came to be but that is the best one in my opinion.

Jersey Devil

Oh of course I forgot to mention the Jersey Devil has a nice long forked tail! Here is a pick of him from an actual newspaper in 1909.

That picture is hilarious!

Well, if that is in fact what the Jersey Devil looks like, then he/she/it is a far cry from sinister!

What does a pact with the devil get you? A PONY! (with batwings, though...)

The only thing I remember that was really Urban Legend-y as a kid was that there were killer clowns (everyone had one of those stories, right?) living in the broken down, junked, ice cream truck in the woods behind my parents house. The rumor was they killed kids and hung them in the truck on meat hooks. Creepy stufff when you are 8 years old.

When I got older I sort of decided that the truck was actually the doing of bored teens and no one bothered to clean it up.

Aside from that, see my post in the Encounters with the Supernatural. But that's more weirdness than Urban Legends.

I second whoever told you to go to www.snopes.com.

I live near the town Stull Kansas where the devil is supposed to appear in the in the cemetery on Holloween.

That's funny... I once interviewed many of the older residents (70 year of age +) about the cemetary and the legend in particular...

It appears that back in the mid to late 1970's a bonified satanic cult (not high school kids with beer kegs) held their mass in the abandoned church (which at that time, apparently still had a roof on it).

As the 1980's were rolling around, the cult either disbanded or changed their public face (all of the residents interviewed were more than a little reluctant to discuss the actual demise of the cult), and the church hasn't been used in that capacity since.

The present legends about the church have been largely manufactured by over-imaginative youth that live, not in Stull, but in surrounding communities. That said, I never did get a straight answer on what exactly became of the cult...
