On portal construction

I’m using the FRCS as my source of info on Portals, if you know of a better one, or one that goes into more detail, please share.

The FRCS states that for a standard two-way portal, one must spend 75,000gp on construction materials and the like. What I want to find out is what materials would one need to create a portal. Specifically, what kind of quest-worthy materials would one need to construct a portal.
Ideally, I’d like to come up with one or two items that are both essential to portal construction and rare and/or hard to acquire. I’m thinking some kind of magically-charged element, but I have no idea what.

I’m also thinking about modifying the rules so that a portal must have a framework built around it, just like a door requires a frame. Admittedly, this is mostly personal preference, that’s the way they are almost always drawn, and that’s the way I like them. But it could also have in-game consequences, like what happens when the physical frame of a portal is destroyed? Is the portal destroyed as well?
The rare elements would then go into not only the casting of the spell (interestingly, the requirement for a teleportation circle is 1,000gp of ruby dust, I think), but mainly for the cost of the portal frame.

Kind of a side issue for me is that I want my mid-level party to be able to destroy a portal, which is impossible unless one has access to Mord’s Disjunction. I’m not sure how to do that without making it too easy for them. I know they can seal it with a Gate Seal spell, but that won’t do for the story line, it needs to be destroyed. Maybe destroying the frame can destroy the portal, but I want to make sure it’s balanced properly.

So if you’re still with me, thanks for putting up with my ramblings.
To sum up, this is what I need:
Ideas for materials involved in portal construction.
Thoughts on balancing out portals with the changes I’ve described.
Lastly, any house-rules or ideas you have for portals I’d be interested in hearing.

There's some verygood portal-related stuff in the FR supplement Underdark -- new types of portal, quirky properties, a portal cleric domain and portal spells. Well worth looking at.

Depending on the nature of a portal, I'd say some part of a Blink-Dog would be in order, as well as the prerequisite "distilled essence of wanderlust."
You gotta have the physically manifested emotional state.

The group ranger has an animal companion that is part Blink Dog. That could make things interesting :)
Not sure what you mean by essence of wanderlust, but I'm curious.

I'll take a look at that FR supplement. I need all the info I can get at this point.

You may want to rule that only permament portals require a framework. Thus the gate spell still works as normal.

I would go through the MM and find creatures that can either planeshift or gate in other creatures from the desired plane. And depending on where they want to create the portal to, would require a creatures blood (or body part) that can gate/planeshift to that specific plane.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that at the outset, but only permanent portals would be affected by the framework rule. Gate would work as written.

I like your idea about blood from planar creatures, but in this campaign the BBEG is trying to build a portal to another world on the Prime. A world in which an army from hell has just destroyed.

That idea still might work, I'll just need to modify it. I kinda pictured the party chasing the baddies' henchmen to a remote site where the necessary ingredients may be found.

Just that. Pick an abstract concept, declare that it is one of the ingredients, and let the player figure out how the hell he can distill wanderlust. It doesn't make sense, which is why it's difficult. ;)

I like that. My players will hate it, but I really, really like it.

Any more ideas?
