Awesome movie. Eggers continues to knock it out of the park - very hard with this one, as the subject matter is so well trod. Skarsgard was terrifying as Orlok. I'd be surprised if he didn't have PTSD after that role.

That said, none of Eggers' other movies can reach the heights of The Witch for me, as that film literally seemed to come out of nowhere.

Loved it, but I like everything Eggers has put out, so no surprise there.

Still deciding what Ellen's motivation was at the end. I really like this take from Snorkenhaufer on r/roborteggers:
"I think its important to look at this more from Ellen's angle than Orlok's. Orlok is a force of nature and a reaction to Ellen's suppression in early 1800s society. The ending isn't Orlok getting what he wants until a fast one is pulled. Its Ellen making peace with her inner nature and her incongruence with society. The villain is Victorian repression and our heroine sacrifices herself to it as she reconciles with her past traumas borne from her desirous nature."

I think that is excellent analysis, she even says at one point "He is my shame". Shame is often just shifted blame. Victorian society loved doing that to individuals (well, doesnt any system)
