newbies guide for Fallout 4

I was checking on my settlements, and I noticed that Taffington had plunged to 10% happiness randomly. When I went to look, not only could I not figure out what the problem was, it I also discovered that the workbench has vanished! I can still access the settlement building menu by holding V, but I can’t build a new workbench.

Has either of these things ever happened to anyone else (an unexplained plunge in happiness levels and/or the disappearance of a settlement workbench)? I’m curious to know if they are related.

I've never seen a workbench disappear, but this thread mentions a couple of possible culprit mods and also a means to fix the issue via console commands.

Thanks. The only mod I have is the one that lets you have Dogmeat as well as a human companion.

I will load up an earlier save to find out the Taffington workbench ID so I can give the console command a try.

EDIT: It worked!

I’ve encountered some weird bugs with Bunker Hill. Shortly after I made it one of my settlements, a Brahmin randomly got tagged as hostile, so the settlers would all attack it, but it wouldn’t die until I attacked and killed it myself.

A little later, I discovered that I couldn’t go to the back corner of Bunker Hill (where the ‘hotel’ is) without the game crashing. 20+ levels later, and I had nearly forgotten about it, but it’s still happening! (I went to find Deb to sell some stuff, and I could see her outside the ‘hotel’ but when I approached, the game crashed. So I guess I won’t ever be able to go to that back corner again in this playthrough.)

At least I was able to fix the issue with the Taffington workbench, and now the happiness levels are going back up! I’ve also trapped a cat and am working on a second one to boost the happiness there. I’ve got cat cages in a few other settlements now too. Obviously one of the writers is a cat lover!

Still haven’t found that random trader who sells dogs … in fact, the only recruitable trader I’ve come across so far is the Vault-Tec rep, and I’ve got that glitch where I can’t assign him to anything. I found some console commands that were supposed to work, so I can now issue interact with him in build mode, but I still can’t assign him to my emporium nor does he seem to count as a settler. My terminal says I’ve got one unemployed person, but I can’t assign him to anything that way either. Grr.

Bunker Hill and east Boston is buggy. That vault tec rep is a merchant. But buggy.

Gene the dog seller is random.

In terms of merchants, so far I only regularly see Lucas, the doctor, Trashcan Carla, and Cricket. I've seen that girl with the robot once, and that was very early in the game. I met the woman from Vault 81 in the cannery, but she left (and then vanished) before I could finish talking to her (so not only did I not recruit her but I also didn't find out where her vault is).

I haven't met any of the other merchants.

I spent tonight rebuilding parts of Vault 88. I went and built a proper indoor garden down one of the side passages, and then I rebuilt my dormitory so it actually uses the quarters sections instead of just divided hallways. LOL!

Next up, I'll rebuild my commissary and clinic. I still haven't quite figured out how to use the big atrium pieces, but I think that's OK. I kind of like having the big open high-ceilinged cavern. It feels less claustrophobic.

All of the recruitable merchants have bugs related to them which sucks

Yeah, I’ve looked at a few of them, but I’m OK with just building a random hodge-podge. I mean, Nora’s really a vault dweller in name only. She spent pretty much the entire time in Vault 111 frozen. She’s got no idea what living in a vault is actually like.
