Need help building... Tasslehoff Burrfoot!

Herzog

Adventurer
I've recently requested help building Flint Fireforge, and have since been asked by a fellow player for help building his character, Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

He's currently got four levels of Rogue, and is interested in getting more out of his 'Kenderness'.

We've actually found a very nice prestige class for him: the Handler from the War of the Lance. However, given our DM's reluctance to include additional books, we're still looking for an alternative.

We're looking for something that provides Bardic Knowledge (or something similar), stealth (hide in plain sight etc), skillpoints, and maybe something similar to Bardic Music.

The easy way would be to simply add levels of Bard, but the problem there is that it's not really 'Sneaky', and Bardic Music (and spells) do not really fit well with the Kender image (IMO)

I'm also looking for something that would pay off soon, since I am under the impression the campaign will halt at lvl 12, so anything that you can't get into until lvl 11 isn't really worth it IMO.

We're restricted to PHB, DMG, Complete Arcane, Complete Warrior, Complete Divine, Complete Adventurer.

His current stats are:
Code:
Race: Kender
Class: Rogue 4

Str 14
Dex 16
Con 14
Int 12
Wis 10
Cha 11

Alignment: N

Feats: Stealth, Point Blank Shot

Skills:
Bluff 5
Climb 7
Craft (cartography) 1
Hide 7
Listen 4
Move Silently 7
Open Lock 5
Search 5
Sleight of Hand 5
Spot 4
Tumble 5
Use Magic Device 2
Speak Language 1

Any suggestions apreciated.

Bards are plenty sneaky: six skill points a level and bluff, hide, move silent, and sleight of hand as class skills. with an 11 charisma and less than 3 ranks of performance won't be doing much bardic music or magic.

Ghost sound could be done as a good ventriloquism/bird call type trick, and know direction could be just a good direction sense.

Detect Secret Doors, Grease, Hideous Laughter, Remove Fear, and Ventriloquism could be described as tricks that a kender pulls off instead of as magic and work pretty well. A kender reaches into his pouch and pulls out a random jar of bacon fat a housewife was going to use in making some cornbread, the kender hurls the jar which breaks and spreads the greasy contents to the effects of a grease spell.

Alternatively picking up skills like knowledge local and maybe a touch of geography, history, or religion work fine for representing a kender general wanderer hodge podge of knowledge. A few ranks but not too many, most of his knowledge should come from bluff and outdated pre-cataclysm maps :)

Given the various descriptions I've read about Kender society, I would think that Kenders would be all about Music, Lore, and magic spells.

That said, the only Hide In Plain Sight ability from the core rules comes from the Shadowdancer prestige class. It's pretty nifty.

I would also advise the player to play the character HE wants rather than trying to copy the character as is. Tas is only a Thief, and to accurately portray him, he should just remain a thief.

Had enother talk with the player.

He's actually looking for a class or prestige class that focusses on Lore, without having to be a spellcaster.

For now, it looks like we're going with Bard levels (or the Handler PrC if we can get it approved)

any suggestions still welcome!
