Mental protection

What would be a good cost for an item that prevented mental control from charm person, dominate person, to resist a vempires charm?. I assume the 1st lvl protection from evil/good spell would be the base but 1x 2000gp seems too cheap.

thoughts?

The protection spells only keep the defended person from receiving the commands telepathically, it does not keep them from being charmed or dominated.

... although if the protection effect is always on, there really isn't that much difference. Note that a charm effect doesn't involve "commands" as such, it just makes the target think the caster is their friend. This would also be suppressed by the protection, I would think.

There is also a protection from charm spell in OA, which is 2nd level. It grants a +1 resistance bonus per 3 caster levels (max +5) on Will saves against charm and compulsion effects.

Theres a mask in PsiHB that gives +4 vs compulsions and enchantments. Would make the perfect template.
Mask of Mind Shield, or something like that (don't have the book handy). But since both Psi and Magic items follow the same rule it would make a good guideline.

No way. The spell says it protects from "mental control" (etc), then goes on to describe the way it basically suppresses things like a vampire's supernatural domination ability. Domination allows you to control the actions of another via telepathic link with the subject's mind. It's that telepathic/mental control that Protection from Evil blocks, while it remains in effect.

Charm person makes you regard the caster as your trusted friend and ally & the spell specifically states it doesn't give you control of the subject. Huge difference.

I think the spell you would need is Mind Blank (Protection8, Sor/Wiz8), which protects you from all devices and spells that detect, influence, or read emotions or thoughts.

And how is a spell supposed to manipulate your thought processes to make the caster your "trusted friend" without some degree of control?

Huge difference.

I find it highly illogical that prot. evil would protect against a stronger form of mental influence, but not a weaker one.

From the DnD FAQ:

The second function of the protection from evil spell blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature or to exercise mental control over the creature. What, exactly, counts as mental control?
"Mental control" includes all spells of the school of Enchantment that have the Charm subschool, such as animal friendship, charm person, and charm monster. It also includes some Enchantment spells of the Compulsion subschool if those spells grant the caster ongoing control over the subject; such spells include dominate person and dominate monster. Compulsions that merely dictate the subject's action at the time the spell takes effect are not blocked. Such spells include command, hold person, geas/quest, hypnotism, insanity, Otto’s irresistible dance, random action, suggestion, and zone of truth.

So hong is correct. Protection from Evil will protect you from Charm Person.

Well. I'll be. Guess I stand corrected.

I think it sucks and goes way beyond the wording of the spell. But, there you go. I learned something new.
