Making fun of D&D

I've never been involved in Fantasy Football, but how much brain-power does it take compared to D&D?
Well, it's not like I have seen the entire members of the Honors Society -- much less the Honor Rolls Club -- playing D&D :]

It's not like you need a much higher brain power. I'm certain the level of intelligence is roughly the same when comparing the football team to a high school AV club. :p

I play in a Fantasy Football league every year. Its a fun distraction.

Some points:

As others have said, sports are more socially acceptable. "Let me tell you about my Football team," is not as frightening to people as "let me tell you about my character."

Fantasy Football takes some time throughout the week, but not necessarily a 4+ hour block all at once.

With computer run leagues such as ESPN or Yahoo, it takes even less effort to play than a MMORPG.

You don't need a GM who has to put in a lot of extra effort to make the games run.

Unambiguous rules.

Just like in D&D, Intelligence and doing your homework can give a player an edge, but luck is a major component.

I like D&D. I like fantasy football.

To over-simplify it, in D&D you role-play as wizards and warriors. In fantasy football, you role-play as an NFL coach, general manager, and team owner.

I've done fantasy baseball, and had a good time with it. But I did not put in nearly as much time as some of the other players, and therefore I was not as up to speed on the obscure players.

Kind of like not keeping up with all the splat books and supplements, so net being up to speed on the new feats and spells.

I play fantasy football, baseball, and D&D. I cantell you, fantasy baseball takes WY more time in a competitive league than D&D could even begin to. Ever heard of Fransisco Liriano? Not many people did before this year. If you hadn't, you won't get very far in fantasy baseball. Kind of like not knowing when you draw an aoo in D&D. That said, I find it geekier than D&D, personally. D&D is creative, fantasy sports is all numbers.
