What is the actual plot? Who would be the characters? Who’s the big bad? What would be the things they must include?

I played years ago and I only remember getting land to power up creatures

Matalas sounds like just the right kind of talented hack to make a fantasy drama based on a collectible card card work. Note: this is actually meant as a compliment.

Full disclosure: I only know his work on season 3 of Picard.

I'm mixed on that product -- most of my complaints are about what they didn't do, rather than what they did*. However, I noticed that (a subset of) the fanbase in general had issues with various violations of universe lore/continuity (changelings being vulnerable to vacuum, etc.). Given the unmitigated knot that is M:tG canon (across tens of thousands of different cards, plus novels, web publications, and so forth), I can only imagine the sturm und drang that will arise in pockets of the fandom over any given directorial decision.
*plus going back to the borg well again, which is a complaint about the repeated-ness of doing so, not the given instance.

As long they make an entertaining movie don’t really care about the usual loathsome fans. MtG has plenty of material to make an entertaining high fantasy movie. Too much really, it’s a matter of picking the best.

Ever notice that "X Fan" has become a term that means "someone who hates everything new that ever emerges from property X"?

I wouldn't worry about what MtG "fans" might think - I'd worry about making a show that people who both have or have not played MtG will want to watch.

I don’t think it’s particularly difficult to make MtG accessible. It has lots of story based content, no need to try and turn the actual gameplay into a movie.

That is the biggest issue with a lot of game base movies and TV. It is a different medium the gameplay is not what makes a good story.
