Magic Items That Improve Craft skills?

Well, no we're not -- at least for our purposes. Whether you agree or not, we want all magic item pricing in one forum, and for now that's Rules. If we decide to change it in the future, we'll be sure folks know about it. We certainly don't feel very strongly about it one way or another, but Rules has been the default for pricing in the past, so I don't see much reason to change it.

In any case, this isn't the thread to discuss it in. If you want to revisit the subject, please use Meta.

EDIT - hey, since when have you been in Boston? Has that always been the case?
EDIT EDIT - huh, for 8 years you have been. Man, I need to pay more attention.

That's a pretty beefy claim to make, DC. And, frankly, I don't care what someone I've never met or heard from on the boards has to say about the issue. If I wanted that, I'll head to Sean Reynold's site.

The pricing rules in the DMG advocate for a cost of (Bonus Squared) * 100 for a competence bonus to skill check.

Every magic item that I can find in the DMG that provides a competence bonus to a skillcheck follows that formula, ergo that formula is the standard. There's no deviation, therefore there's no need to stray into "hard" house rules territory.

I read that article and, really, I see nothing more than someone's opinion. And someone who seems rather bitter about the whole topic to boot. Sounds to me like he's gaming with the wrong people.

If a player comes up with an idea for a magic item, why shouldn't he/she be allowed to make it? If it's balanced, what's wrong with that? Sounds like a DM who doesn't want to relinquish control...
