I've heard lately of a spell called Fly Like an Arrow... what does that do ?

Can somebody hint me on this ?

Thanks in advance,

It's from Dragon issue 308.

It can only be cast by dragons (or those with a Dragon Magic feat) - I think it basically adds a Sprint ability (like a cheetah) to your Fly speed.

You'd need to find the issue to get the full details.

Hmm, sounds close to Dimension door range,

I'm doing this from memory, but it was one of my favorite spells to add to Overland Flight, so it should be pretty accurate.

Basically, while the spell is in effect, you can increase your fly speed. If you spend one full round moving your full fly speed in a straight line, the next round your fly speed is multiplied by x10, as long as you continue moving at full speed in a straight line.

It's like getting a running start to build momentum, then blasting off into the distance. Very good for outrunning a goblin army to warn the city they're marching toward...

Also, considering a base fly speed of 60ft from the Fly spell, x10 is 600ft, and x4 for running, that's 2400ft in a round. I highly doubt anybody will have time to ready a wall of anything before you blast past them. That's about a mile in less than 18 seconds.

Side note, the 'Fly' spell specifically precludes the run action... and does not, IMHO, grant the target a 'Fly Speed' that can be modified by other spells.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread :)

Well... bugger. When did that happen? Besides, how can you charge but not run? That makes absolutely no sense.

Anyway, 1200ft a round is still pretty damn fast. About 120 MPH, and plenty fast enough to kill yourself on that readied Wall spell, apparently. If the other guy sees you in time to use it.

But still, put that spell on an actual Dragon. If I remember right, that's a 200ft base speed, for 8000ft per round running. That's a little over three miles in 12 seconds, about 900 MPH if my calculations aren't horribly messed up. And if I recall my obscure details, that's more than just a little bit over the speed of sound. That just seems pretty kickass to me, is all...

Edit: Also, Fly gives you a fly speed, which means that anything that modifies a fly speed can be used, except things like Feats that requires flight. And even then, I allow my players to take those, even, they just take effect only when you actually have the fly speed or effect active.
