Locate Object question

It's likely to come up in my game in the near future but I'm unsure on one thing about Locate Object. Will it work if the item is in a Handy Haversack or some other type of magical item that holds things in a pocket dimension?

I'm guessing that since the item in question would be beyond the range of the spell that it wouldn't work. But the spells description says nothing about inter-planar detection which surprises me. So there is no rule against it, technically it should work, but tell me which direction the plane is in?

Using the description of Rope Trick as a guide, it seems to me that Locate Object wouldn't work. The passage reads:

"Creatures in the extradimensional space are hidden, beyond the reach of spells (including divinations), unless those spells work across planes."

Locate Object has nothing in its description that indicates it works across planes, and in fact has a defined range limit. I would say you could use Locate Object against the Bag of Holding itself, since it is on the plane...in the same way that you can Dispel a Rope Trick's planar interface (the "window" that people pass through to get in and out), but you can't Dispel things within the Rope Trick.

Rope Trick has a special caveat preventing detection - a bag of holding does not. Objects in a bag of holding are simply 10 feet or so farther away than the opening of the bag - locate object works just fine on that.
