Hunter Ranger Multiclass

So I had read unflattering things about rangers (often Beastmaster) for some time. But was curious about the hunter subcalss...

My reading of it suggests that this is the most efficient way to get an additional attack (i.e. it is short of adding five levels of fighter to something else) assuming you often fight groups.

I wondered how often they get an attack on multiple enemies within 5' in actual play.

If the ranger is using a ranged weapon, quite often.
If the ranger is using a melee weapon, fairly often but requires more maneuvering.

This is my experience using a Hunter Ranger 6->7 Monk 2->6 multiclass from levels 8-13.

Note: If your DM likes to use single powerful creatures (dragon, giant, powerful wizard, etc) then you will obviously see very little use of this ability. Most normal encounters you should be able to see horde breaker used a decent amount of the time.

I think this is true.

I would also like to note that due to the action economy of 5e single monster encounters tend to be easier than horde encounters, so I tend to always take Horde Breaker on my Rangers.

I'd rather have that attack + all riders like ability score bonus, Hunter's Mark, and magic weapon damage when I really need it than the consistent 1d8 from Colossus Slayer. Of course YMMV.

Around half the time I think Hordebreaker is better than colossus slayer.

Hunter Ranger make better archers due to class features/spells and things like sharpshooter. You can also apply -5/+10 to volley.

The Ranger class, particularly the UA revised version, is really not bad at all. I think Hunter is pretty strong ESPECIALLY for a martial multiclass dip. Natural Explorer, Fighting Style, and Horde breaker are all strong features.

I was just toying with the idea of using hordebreaker with a reach weapon to increase the targets who might be within 5' of one another AND within reach.

Actually was toying with the idea of going three levels of ranger and all other into hexblade blade pact warlock...

I really like blade pacts and saw this as a way to add some offensive juice along with a couple of spell slots!

It'd be a good dip. You could use medium armor and the Defensive fighting style for extra toughness too.
